This place is great! I went with a fellow foodie and longtime friend of mine. She says this may be her new favorite yakitori place in San Diego!! It's definitely mine!!
This place is true authentic Japanese. The food is outstanding as is the Saki. Great stop.
My go to place when I was living in San Diego, best skewers I've had hands down. The chicken cartilage is to die for, other recommendations include negima, beef tongue, and soboro. They open late which is a plus, as most dining outlets in San Diego close before midnight.
We recently visited Yokohama Yakitori Koubou, located in the Izakaya Sakura/Original Pancake House plaza on Convoy. It’s been on our to-do list for a while, and I was excited to try it out since I love yakitori (grilled skewered items). The only other places in San Diego where we’ve had yakitori is Yakitori Yakyudori and its sister restaurant Hinotez. We enjoyed both places, but wanted to try something new.
My co-worker David really wanted us all to try yakitori at this one spot that he really loved and arranged this outing to Yokohama Yakitori Koubou for us. It’s a Japanese place filled with delicious grilled things on a stick! Meat on a stick – doesn’t that sound awesome? I’m that one person that always asks for a fork. Chopsticks and I just don’t really get along very well. I’m sure this is because I haven’t ever practiced, but the last thing I want to deal with it trying to learn how to get the food into my mouth. I want to eat without the frustration! Here’s photos of the current menu: Menu Page 1 | Menu Page 2 | Menu Page 3 Everyone ordered a few sticks o’ food. David and his wife, Allison, said they usually also order a side of miso soup and rice along with their grilled sticks o’ food. I followed this example since just eating grilled meats alone didn’t seem like enough food for the belly. [ miso soup ] Miso soup alone will set you back $1 and the rice and miso soup combo is $2.50
There was a lot of vegetarian options, but I was not incredibly impressed with the dishes I had. Although, it did give me a chance to try a new meal: the green tea noodles.
My takeaway: Yokohama is a good place to get some quick bites and a hot cup of sake! Overall this restaurant is unique, fast, and charming.
Japanese style skewers place, and this place just nailed it!! Great food and service with perfect atmosphere. I would visit over and over!! Easy five stars. I tried not only skewers but other foods too, and they were all good.
Please make a reservation to ensure you have a proper two hour time limit. We came at 5pm without a reservation and they told us we need to finish by 6pm so that they could get ready for the party at 6:15pm. At 5:45pm, they made sure to tell us last call for any orders.
We ordered two of what we liked. Service was quick and we were out by 6pm. Everything was delicious, can’t go wrong with what you order. My favorite was the Kalbi. Everyone else loved the chicken meatball. That was too salty for my liking.
Parking in this plaza could be tricky but if you come early, there are plenty of spaces.
Fantastic food, the Chicken Rice Bowl was amazing. The chicken thigh skewer was also really tender and juicy. The only downside is there is a really long wait for the food, and it is usually at least 1hr+ if you don't have a reservation. A lot of the seats are empty and they stayed empty an hour later when we got our seat so I wonder why they didn't just seat some people there. Parking here is tricky, there's usually not a lot of spots.
The atmosphere is good and grill stuff are tasty. But other dishes way too salty and the waitress is not friendly…
Good izakaya for curry and skewers. We liked the beef curry, short rib skewer and chicken gizzard skewers. The short rib and chicken thigh skewers are super tenders.
We arrived at 5 on a weekday and there’s no wait. We do see that almost all tables are reserved.
Really nice place and reasonable prices. Food was great and service was decent (though our server did not seem overly excited to be there). Can't ask for much more!
Highly recommend the chicken liver and beef tongue skewers, as well as the beef bowl and spicy Japanese cucumber appetizer.
MAKE A RESERVATION!!
We came here on a Tuesday night and it was so busy! We waited about 2 hours and finally our table was ready.. once we sat down the server informed us that they were out of a lot of items. It was about an hour before closing when we sat down.
My friend and I ordered edamame, Ajitama (salted egg), Toriudon, the omelet and some yakitori meats. The salted egg was so good I felt like the serving was too small though. The udon here was also really good and probably the best I’ve ever had state side. The omelet was so good creamy and tested really authentic. The yakitori was also really good but super limited so I didn’t get to try everything. The food overall was really good and I can’t wait to go back! Highly recommend this place for people who have had and know authentic Japanese Flavors but DON’T FORGET THE RESERVATION!i
The food was great. Small skewers and portions but taste really good. The restaurant is small and noisy. Giving it a 4-star for great service and tasty food.
Busy place! Food was tasty and there was a good selection. Service was good, especially considering there were 10 of us at our table. Chicken skewers were $4 each and were quite small - I think 4 small pieces of chicken per skewer. I asked our server if what I ordered (2 chicken skewers and 2 pepper skewers) was enough for for me. She laughed and said that was a child's portion. Not sure that was a joke or not, but for someone who was not excessively hungry, it was enough. If you brought your appetite, you'd need more. Rice was not included, but I grabbed some from another diner at our table. Photos show remains of the wasabi skewers, plum skewers and the pepper skewers.
