I ordered pupusas and tamales and both were excellent. I love the plantain wrapped Salvadoran tamales. They tasted like they were cooked with fire or possibly on charcoal. Delicious! I will for sure recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Salvadoran food.
The pupusas were delicious! I had one of each. The revuelta was my favorite! My friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. They had plenty of space and seating for parties of any size. When friends ask about Pupusas in SLC I will always recommend El Viroleño.
If you’re looking for Pupusas and El Salvadorian food in Salt Lake City , this is a decent place.Maybe they’re not the best Pupusas that you’ll ever try , but they’re good enough and they’re freshly handmade every day.I really like the Loroco one but the Chicken and Pork are very good too (specially the chicken one).Their Tamales are very good too , and I enjoy the Elote one due to its rich flavor.Their encurtidos for the Pupusas are good too.
Their Maracuya drink (Passion fruit) is a must try for sure as well as their Horchata.
Is located on a not very busy area of Salt Lake City and you’ll be able to find parking around.
Service was splendid and this is why I give this place a 5 stars , due to the service and the freshly made from scratch food.
Authentic Central American standards. Salvadoreñan pupusas with all the trimmings. Guatemalan tipica breakfasts with fried platanos and crema. Native Salvadoreñan soda Supercolashampan (tastes like bubble gum). Surrounding area looks dilapidated and outside it is painted a light orange hue, but that tells you the delicious treasure awaits you inside! Atol de élote (hot corn drink) will warm your soul and the thick tortillas will melt in your mouth as you use them to lap up your blended beans, seasoned perfectly! The sopa de res (beef soup) even had huisquil, a native squash! Give it a chance to be the different you seek. Natives & return-missionary approved!
Fair price on the pupusas and made to order. The maseca (cornmeal pastry) had an amazing texture that was way less stretchy and more crumbly than other pupusas I've had. Great sauce and chopped cabbage. Service was friendly and they speak English here if you're worries about that. The horchata here is Mexican-style (rice based) instead of the Salvadoran-style (seed based). Your order will take a few minutes but it's because they are making it fresh!! Do yourself a favor and get a tamale- incredible flavor and is cooked central American style in a banana leaf, not corn husk.
Food was great and inexpensive. Will definitely be added to my list of hidden gems in the west part of the city. Excited to try the rest of their menu items. Pupusas are delicious thick corn tortillas stuffed with varieties of meats and or cheeses. Definitely recommended for anyone that wants to try and expand their food horizons.

Tasty food. Great service. Nice little quaint restaurant. Clean restaurant and restrooms. The location isn’t to hard to get to. Parking is a little tricky. I recommend trying this place for sure.
Most authentic Salvadorian cuisine in Utah, highly recommend when seeking pupusas and yuca frita. The curtido and salsa well flavored. Looking forward to exploring other menu options. Gracias El Viroleño.
Authentic homemade food! Everything radiates fresh. This hole in the wall is a Hidden Gem in Salt Lake.
Delicious, fresh, and cheap pupusas. Yum! I stumbled upon El Viroleño just driving by and glad I stopped in. It's definitely a no frills but really hits the spot. They have a specials board and lots of other things I'd like to come back to try – chile verde anyone?!
