This place is great! I always go here when I visit Portland. The menu has many unique, creative dishes at excellent prices. I went there two consecutive evenings this past month. First, I tried the Smoked Pork Caldo: black kale, Yukon gold potatoes, cilantro and serrano chile. Delicious! I do not like spicy foods, and this dish had just the right amount of kick. The second evening, I tried the Tavern Toast: olive relish, goat cheese, focaccia. I could have had another plate, it was so good. $10 covered the meal (if you just want something light), drink and tip. So many other items on the menu I'd like to try, but will have to wait for another Portland vacation.
They have the best food! When we stay downtown we will eat at the Red Star for breakfast, Lunch, and dinner. Menu changes regularly so there is always a nice surprise! So good!
What a great place for breakfast! (I didn't get a chance to try lunch or dinner during my trip.)
I was very impressed by the breakfast menu selection, flavor, and freshness. Some of the best brisket I've every had (hope they keep it on the menu).
Warm atmosphere and cozy seating.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Great location.
This place is great if you want a Portland bar experience! If you're looking for a quick meal this might not be the best option for you. But if you want good drinks and great food and atmosphere this place is awesome! Their happy hour is great value too! But be careful if you reserve through Open Table. Their happy hour ends at 6pm but the app will tell you it goes until 7.
Mom and I stumbled upon this place after a show and we'll definitely be coming back. The service was very attentive and the drinks were strong, I recommend the old-fashioned. We shared a cheese platter with some delicious Humboldt Fog cheese, and I had the risotto which is absolutely delicious. The decor made me feel like we were missing a cigar but it didn't feel overly pretentious, can't wait to come back.
A little pricey but omg, the ribeye was to die for! Try the roasted chicken too - even the white beans and hamhocks side is out of this world yummy. It's attached to Hotel Monaco where we stayed so a late dinner here was somewhat impromptu and turned into a pleasant surprise.
The Red Star has a great atmosphere and is in walking distance from several hotels. The burger is excellent, the fried potato wedges addictive and the old fashioned is done right - gentlemen's cube included!
Stopped in to get an order to go. The bartender Brandon was so cool I ended up drinking and eating there. He was really knowledgeable and truly was an artist with the cocktails. The whisky cocktails were great and I highly recommend! Going back tonight!
Get the Curious Scotsman and the Red Star Burger and you shall be pleased. Dinner menu is slightly bigger than the lunch menu, but what's on the lunch menu is excellent as well. Whiskey drinks are good stuff.
The food is delicious! Great wine and drink menu. Dessert was amazing! Try the Peach Cobler for Two. Your welcome!
Red Star knows how to mix a proper cocktail. Nicely done, Brianna.
UPDATE: Micah rocks. This dude knows how to mix a proper cocktail too. We have a contest -- name this martini: half Belvedere, half Sapphire. Cocktail onions, no olives or vermouth (God forbid!). Give us your best idea! I've been calling it Bob (Bombay on Belvedere) for years, but certainly you can do better. What say you?!
UPDATE: Aviation gin. Rocks. Twist. Boom, drop the mike FTW.
I had a 40 minute wait for the bus so I ducked in to Red Star Tavern. All the staff was wonderful! I had a lovely Potato leek soup & Coffee Nudge. It was the perfect end respite to a long, cold commute!
