Huge portions are the norm so you won't go home hungry. Try the blonde chicken and the pulled pork. The sauce is sweet but not too sweet. Side dishes are good as well. The outdoor patio is quiet and private.
The Blonde Combo Plate is enough food for two people.
My fav. I always enjoy going to eat at Johnny Rays in the colonnade. Food and service are so consistent. Food is always fresh and always comes out super quick. And regardless of how full you are, you must try the pie!!!! Best in town. You will not be disappointed.
Best onion rings hands down. All around this is my favorite BBQ in bham. Best onion rings, beans, and pies.

Consistently good food. I've been a Johnny Ray's customer for about 23 yrs. And yes Shaunte (the current owner) was a waitress back then! I have travel the country from one side to the other and can say that the food rivals any I've had anywhere. There are some items which I consider to be THE BEST I've had. The baked beans, chicken, and ribs? And as for those pies,,,, none anywhere even comes close!!!!!!!! Bottom line if you want good food good service EVERY time you gotta go to JR!!!!
So good. I have been eating at Johnny Ray's since I was a kid. It has always been very good food. The new ownership and remodel has made Johnny Ray's even better. The prices are unbeatable and you never leave hungry. The pie is amazing, especially the chocolate and banana! The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, making every part of the meal enjoyable. I love this place and recommend it to everyone! You won't be disappointed.
Have to say hands down some great BBQ in Birmingham KILLER SAUCE and no skimping on meat and what I great way to end the meal with the best pie in town!! The place feels comfortable and not like the other "chain" BBQ places in town...no lie when they say "its next to home!"
OUTSTANDING is really not a good enough word. It's not a fancy place - and THANK THE LORD there are still places you can go that DON'T serve alcohol - but It would be impossible for ribs to be ANY better ANY where. Sauce is so good you can turn it up and drink it. Seriously - ribs are A M A Z I N G. Rib plate is served with 5 WET ribs and 3 sides and texas toast for around 13 bucks - what a deal! And then there is the pie. Oh my my my my. Lemon pie is - well - words cannot describe how good it is. Everybody has their "likes" when it comes to BBQ but I have eaten a LOT of Q in a LOT of cities and this is hands down the best I have ever eaten from anywhere. People of Birmingham don't know how good they got it! I wish they would open one - or many - in Atlanta.
