Always meant to post this: shortly after moving to Naples, we were walking to a nearby recommended gelato shop. This place has a small table out front, passing out tiny samples -- engaging, nice talk, said they also had gelato. Went into the back and kids started to order, I noticed no prices posted anywhere. Hmmmm. Ah, how much could gelato cost? Surprise, lady wanted 20 Euro for 4 one and two flavor cones! I laughed, she yelled to a nearby man to tell us how much it should be, and my Italian is not great but I could hear her say that he should tell us 20 E, which he dutifully did. I argued, she reduced the price to too much instead of ridiculous. No one to blame but myself. Two very important tourist lessons: (1) no matter how nice people seem, know what something costs BEFORE you order it! Just say "Quanto costo?" (2) NEVER eat at any place that has to hustle you in off the street. Good places don't need that. Just keep walking. Enjoy Italy!
