Love the food here. A bit pricey, but well worth it. Very fun atmosphere as well. Very busy place so be prepared to wait for awhile. You won't be disappointed.
Always have a great experience here! This place is a very popular spot in Wichita, Kansas so be prepared to wait a bit to be seated - trust me, it's worth it! Sumo's is a Japanese steakhouse with tabletop hibachi cooking stations. Customers sit around the cooktops and actually get to watch your meal cook and transform in front of your eyes! Sumo's also has a bar that serves unique, yummy cocktails - and they have a section where you can order sushi. This place rocks!
I don't understand all these negative reviews! I eat sushi here with my family once a month and we always have a wonderful experience. I love Sumo's sushi because it isn't so large I have to unhinge my jaw to eat it, unlike the other popular sushi restaurant in town. Doesn't hurt that they have the best garlic fried rice in the country, either. I crave it all the time!
GARLIC FRIED RICE! Enough Said. The show is always a blast, the chef's do a great job. Every meat or seafood you can order for the grill is amazing, but if you dont order the Garlic Fried Rice you are missing out! I order a double order just so I can snack on it while watching the show and then still have some left for the entree!
Pretty good. My friends rave over this place, but we think it's just pretty good. Food is a little better than average, but the service and 'show' from the chef's is very good. We typically have a very good time. Drinks are usually very good and adequately priced. Go check it out and have fun.
A Couple of thoughts. I was looking through the reviews, and wanted to share my take on a restaurant I like alot:
First) There are actually essentially three separate customer experiences going on--a bar (where you can get drinks and sushi), a sushi restaurant (which almost never has a wait, and where you can get sushi, appetizers, drinks, and more), and a grill restaurant (which often has a wait). Me, I love sushi, so I never really have any issues.
But if you want the Hibachi grill, then:
Second) The restaurant does not do reservations. They will take call-aheads which guarantees they don't turn you away at the door (they are usually so busy on the weekends anyone without a call ahead is likely to be turned away) but this does not guarantee a time. Usually the weekdays (M-Th) seem calmer.
If you come early on the weekends (within half an hour of opening) you seem to have a good shot of being seated right away, but once the tables fill up you cannot be seated until a table chooses to get up. Even if the chef's are moving at full speed, get to the table, cook the food, do the show, and deserts are pushed, this means that 1 table will take about 30 minutes to finish. In reality, people often sit for another half hour or more after the chef leaves, just chatting and enjoying the heaps of goodness on their plates. Yes I am sorry, I have been one of these people.
It would be nice if they had a way to speed this up, but I don't know the solution. Maybe they should have ejectable seats? What I do know is the few times I have eaten at the grill, it has been AMAZING. I also know that I have run into crazy wait times at many other high end restaurants in Wichita during the weekends, so I am not sure this problem is unique to here.
So for those worried about the wait, sorry, but maybe this info helps you negotiate it better? For those worried about the service, I haven't seen it myself, but that sucks, and you have every right to be upset. For those worried about the food...oh, wait, no one is complaining about the food. Huh.
I have ate here twice. Great food, no wait. Both times were on business, so I visited during the week. I had sushi both times. It was fresh and fast. It has a modern hip feel as they play upbeat and modern music. I always enjoy it, and will keep coming back.
A fun way to experience Japanese cuisine. Not necessarily authentic, but very good food, prepared and presented in an entertaining way.
Service leaves a lot to be desired. I went to Sumo with a group of 14. We were treated poorly during out arrival. The hostess even rolled her eyes at me. The bartender was not friendly. The chefs at the grill saved this place. The food was good, but I am not sure I would return because we were treated as a inconvienence, and to top it off this was not the first time. The first time was for my birthday, and there was a group of 6, and again the bartenders and hostess were not service oriented in the Least! Food good, but service is "barely acceptable" at the best possible rating.
The experience of going to a hibachi grill was definitely there. The ambiance was fine. Our chef was fun and energetic and the performance was exactly as expected. We went during half price martinis which was a pleasant surprise.
The food was fine. It was all cooked the same regardless of the cooking preference of the steak. Worth going at least once to see for yourself.
It was an awesome atmosphere the man doing the grill was amazing fun full of energy it was my son's birthday dinner because birthday is tomorrow we had 8 people one vegan and they loved it
