Beacon Restaurant

This is the quintessential neighborhood diner.  While this was my first visit I have a feeling nothing has changed there in decades.  It is an old school breakfast place, nothing exotic or fancy but has all the standards.  The omelets are huge, 3 eggs and stuffed full with great ingredients. 

Service is top notch, with a wait staff that has done this for years, some decades and now how to take care of the customer, again old school.  Price is inexpensive, and when you look at the quantity and the quality the price is remarkably low. 

Place is large, but from what I understand fills up, and understandably so.  I arrived before the big Sunday morning crowd and it was filling up while I was there, and when I left the parking lot had no empty spots.  Overall, a great place for breakfast in Wichita for an old fashioned breakfast.

They have been around in Wichita for years and located right next door to the Wichita Eagle newspaper building which used to be called The Wichita Beacon and the Wichita Eagle-Beacon. In 1989, the Eagle-Beacon was renamed the Wichita Eagle but the Beacon restaurant kept the same name and have served many of the same people throughout all these years. Enough with the history lesson though, the Beacon is located at 909 E Douglas Ave and are open daily from 6 am – 3 pm and on Sundays from 7 am – 3 pm. To my knowledge, they have no official website.  If you ask many people what their favorite breakfast place is in Wichita, they will immediately say The Beacon. I’ve been here a couple times in the past but it’s probably been a good 7-8 years since I’ve been here. With such a long line at Doo-Dah Diner ( reviewed here ) one morning, a friend and I decided to head here since it was close by. On a weekend morning, the Beacon was also packed and there was a wait list for people. Unlike Doo-Dah though, the wait was just 5-10 minutes compared to the hour wait we were quoted earlier.  The Beacon has your mom and pop shop breakfast appeal to it. You imagine an old diner that your folks and grandparents have been going to for years; this fits that. For our dining experience at The Beacon, we stuck with breakfast. I have this rule that if you go to a restaurant known for their breakfast, you HAVE to order breakfast. I went ahead and ordered the corned beef hash with hash browns and two eggs. My friend ordered the French toast breakfast with eggs, bacon and hash browns along with a large cinnamon roll. After ordering, I noticed our server didn’t even ask how we wanted our eggs cooked. Best Breakfast. I remember when i was a little kid eating breakfast here with my grandfather. He died when i was 7, but some how i remembered this place. I drove past and something in my mind clicked, i have seen the lighthouse some where before. when i pulled in i remembered the parking lot behind the eagle newspaper. i walked inside and i remember comming here with my grandfather and sitting at a large round table. i was probably 6 the last time i ate here, but i remembered breakfast and buffalo. they have a breakfast special that is a piece of meat ( i ordered ham, i hate ham but it was great) on top of an english muffin topped with an egg (i like it over hard) and cheese with a potato. It was amazing that after 14 years after my grandfather died i remembered him, and who i thought was my grandmother (ended up being his girlfriend because they were divorced by then), i remembered the food. this place not only has sentimental value to it for me, but it has the best breakfast hands down.

Btw don't order a salad, it is a breakfast and buffalo place.

Brian and I arrived at Tracy’s an hour too early on Saturday so we decided to eat breakfast at The Beacon to kill time. Neither Brian nor I had ever been there but my sister Jenni was been there a few times. We’d heard some pretty good things so we were excited to give it a try. Brian wasn’t quite awake yet. I’m not sure how often the specials board is updated, but this is what it looked like that Saturday. I usually gravitate towards specials because of the discounted pricing ( read: I’m cheap). Brian and I ordered the first two items on the list. Brian got the Beacon traditional with country potatoes, which he normally likes, but he didn’t like them as much because they had onions and a bunch of other stuff. Also, they were cold. The temperature inside the restaurant was cold (according to Brian; I thought it was fine) so I’m wondering if they were cold because we were seated close to an air vent or because it had to sit and wait while they re-made my omelette.
