Being a San Diego transplant, I was skeptical this new location would live up to my memories. I must confess, it wasn't as good as I remembered. It was WAY better! The classic dishes are still there (original fish taco, fish taco especial, pinto beans, lime rice, chips, etc.) and the new dishes are fantastic.
You order/pay at the counter and they give you a number to put on your table. You can hit up the salsa bar for all kinds of extras - mild, medium, hot, tomatillo, cucumber cilantro, or chipotle salsa, as well as slices of lemon, lime, or roasted poblano.
Besides unsweetened iced tea, they also have unsweetened passionfruit green tea and unsweetened mango iced tea.
The decor is clean and trendy with plenty of high-top and low-top seating choices.
The food takes about 5 to 10 minutes to hit the table. We both opted for the Coastal Trio for $9.99. I got the Original Fish Taco (beer battered wild Alaska Pollock topped with white sauce, mild salsa and fresh cabbage), Salsa Verde Shrimp Taco (topped with salsa verde, avocado, melted cheese, creamy chipotle sauce, cilantro/onion mix, and cabbage), and Wild Mahi Mahi Taco (topped with fire-roasted corn, creamy chipotle sauce, cilantro/onion mix, and cabbage).
I went back and got a Wild Alaska Coho Salmon Taco (garlic-marinaded salmon topped with fire-roasted corn, creamy chipotle sauce, cilantro/onion mix and cabbage). All of the tacos were delicious. The most surprising was the wild Coho salmon. I can taste the difference between wild Coho and farm raised and it was the real deal.
My gentleman adventurer went with the Grilled Gourmet Taco with Shrimp (topped with cheese, bacon, avocado, roasted chipotle salsa, creamy chipotle sauce, and cilantro/onion mix), as well as the Original Fish Taco and Wild Mahi Mahi. He especially liked the shrimp taco (probably because of the bacon). He also got a side of pinto beans, lime rice, and tortilla chips, just like when he was a kid growing up in San Diego. The flavors were spot on. Almost like going home again.
Rubio's prides themselves on using quality ingredients and making everything at the restaurant. You can really taste the difference.
I hadn't been to (or even seen) a Rubio's since I left San Diego in 2000. I have to say that they've really cranked the Mexican fish taco/fast-casual concept up several notches, and they've done it very well. Huzzah! From the decor to cleanliness, from the service to the fresh, made-to-order food, everything was excellent. We spoke to a lovely young lady who talked with my mom and I (I had just flown in from my home in Maryland), and the young lady (Paola) shared with us that the company plans to expand into 70 locations across Florida over the not-too-distant future. Hope the expansion and growth goes well. Great job on the execution of this store. I hope all others are just as good!!!
Loved this place. I loved the nachos and the portion was huge! I wasn't a fan of the chicken. It seemed blackened and that's just not a taste I personally like, but I'm sure it's good for others. The beans were awesome! I do wish they were refried, but I'll take them as they were. And the salsa bar was good. My favorite was the mild. Overall, the ingredients were fresh, the food was good, the dining area was clean, and the staff were awesome.

First time having them and we loved it. Got to try the grilled shrimp and bacon burrito, fish especial taco, and shrimp taco. All were great with the fish especial being the best. Service was super friendly and very fast. Will definitely come back especially for taco Tuesday deals. Oh and the sangria was good without being overly Sweet like others.
Hey, first time here and it was pretty good. I go then California Bowl with Blackend Mahi. ($9.95) the Mahi was cooked nicely and all the ingredients tasted fresh. My friend got 3 tacos, whitefish, shrimp and Mahi and he said they were great. The store was clean and there is plenty of parking. There is a lot of seafood on the menu. I'd come back again.
I am giving 4 stars based on many years of previous great experiences at Rubios in San Diego. Visited Rubios in Tampa, I got the taco trio. The original fish taco and the shrimp taco lived up to expectations, but the Mahi Mahi taco was like eating a sock. Didnt taste bad, but it was too much work to chew through the tuna. Wife ordered the California chicken bowl...she was not happy. Kids ordered fish tacos and were pleased. Service was great, staff was friendly, but not my best Rubios experience.
I got a couple hours before my flight. Found this place from Google map and decided to try it. I ordered a blacken grouper taco. The cooking of the grouper was good. It was not overcooked. Flavor was just right. If you want more spices, they have a hot sauce bar for you to add spices to it. The seating is very comfortable and relaxing. The decor was simple and clean. The menu was simple and featuring seafood of various kind. I wish they could offer trio tacos, perhaps with a combo version that allows us to sample the different versions. Now I wonder if I should have ordered the shrimp or seafood taco. Sometimes it is hard to choose. It is a very nice place and I definitely want to come back some other time.
Great tasting fish tacos and much more. Place is clean, ingredients are fresh and staff is friendly. I had the mahi mahi fish tacos and they were great, probably not a bad dish in the house. @tpafood on IG
Great fast food, excellent service!
We had the grilled chicken tacos with greens and the power bowl. It was very tasty and flavourful. It was ready quick too.
What stood out the most was the kind service. A server came and asked us about our food, and later the manager even came and did the same, and cleaned our table of our empty plates and used napkins. I’d definitely come here again!
I had the panko breaded shrimp tacos and they were delicious. I like the fact that there is a salsa bar. The only thing I wish I didn't need to do was pay for sour cream.
Excellent tortilla soup and fish tacos. Tasty salsas and good selection of beverages. Definately on my list for next time I'm in town.
The restaurant is nice and clean. I ordered the coastal trio and it wasn't bad. I was not super impressed but I would probably go back for taco Tuesday. It has a decent outdoor area that is pet friendly.
