Late last week I stopped by a local BBQ joint while looking for a place to eat lunch. I was just simply was cruising by, saw the pig, and stopped in. It is a small restaurant called “The Boar’s Nest“. By that description I could tell what I was getting into, and I was excited for the thought. Good smoked meats has never failed me. My only worry was that this place would disappoint by selling knock-off smoked meats (like stuff bought at Costco that is heat and server). I am glad to report that my worry was for naught.

The fried chicken burger was big and juicy! I like the Memphis sauce, but wanted more of a deep BBQ flavor from it.

Really small, very casual place. Order at the counter, grab one of the 6 tables type place. They have 3 or 4 beers on tap. I get the pulled pork sandwich and play with the 6 or so sauces they provide. I really like this place.

Solid BBQ and a good price. Only been once but I will be back again very soon. The fried chicken sandwich was excellent and the way they keep the chicken moist is amazing- the sauces were all good and in particular I liked the mustard sauce.

I am looking forward to trying more of the sandwiches as soon as I can.

I love the food, thought it seems a little over priced.

Sweet BBQ. I ended up here while on a visit from Texas. I must say they have defintely got it down. I thought the food was excellent, especially the pulled pork and the variety of sauces. Being from Texas I've had quite a bit of BBQ over the years. This place is definitely top notch. Who would have thought in Seattle.

Brisket was good. The rest was just o.k.. I have to agree with Pedro Hernandez on some points that he makes about the food. I ordered the Brisket BBQ plate ($12.00).
The brisket was quite tender but a bit dry and I felt I should have got a bit more of a portion (after I ordered the counterperson came out and wrote that they were "out of brisket" on the blackboard). For my sides I had the onion rings and the deep fried mac and cheese.
The onion rings were straight out of the freezer bag from Costco and deep fried. Wouldn't you want to beer batter and deep fry your own onion rings?
The deep fried mac and cheese balls were similar to the onion rings. They were tasty BUT I think what they are doing is well, CHEATING. I've had enough Stouffers mac and cheese to know what it tastes like and it tasted like Stouffers mac and cheese from one of those big trays you get from Costco. They got a scoop, made some balls out of the mac and cheese, coated the balls with batter and then deep fried them and serve them up.
The " A List" Sauces (listed in order of how much I liked them):
1) Kansas City-Very rich and mildly spicy and a deep flavor. Bravo!
2) South Carolina-Rich and tangy mustard based sauce. Again, Bravo!
3) North Carolina-One of the better vinegar based sauces I have had, good flavor.
The "Not so successful" sauces:
1) Texas-Not enough smokey flavor and spices to make a difference. If I wanted straight ketchup from the bottle I would use, well, ketchup.
2) Memphis-This sauce had a musty smell and taste. No spice or tang that I could detect.
3) Alabama and Kentucky-No shows. These sauces were not on the tables with the other sauces and were not offered to me when I ordered my food. Perhaps you need to ask for them?
The YELP testimonial on The Boars Nest's website front page says they have "a warm and fun southern atmosphere" but all they have on the walls are a few old football pennants and they play country music (I WANT ZYDECO OR SOME SOUTHERN BLUES!) over the speakers.
They have a good start with the quality of the meat they serve at The Boars Nest but what they need to do is come up with some original recipies for their side items which, as I mentioned before, are just food out of the freezer. I challenge you Boars Nest come up with your own recipes for your mac and cheese and hand cut your onions and for gods sake beer batter them. For me personally,GOING TO A "SOUTHERN" STYLE FOOD ESTABLISHMENT MEANS I will taste some "tried and true" recipe that was handed down through generations of family.
Also, your selection of beers is decidedly un-southern. Would you consider serving Abita?? We can get the beers you serve pretty much anywhere in Ballard.
Tha Boars Nest gets a marginal "likes it" from me. I will go back because I enjoyed the brisket and some of the sauces.
Ribs at the next visit I think.

Best BBQ Seattle has ever had! Contrary to what Pedro said everything I had was excellent! I got a 1/2 rack of ribs that fell off the bone and needed no sauce! However the sauces are all homemade and it shows. The prices were great especially because of the amount of meat you get. I had fried Mac and cheese which was the best I'd ever had and the collard greens that for once are done right! Don't take what Pedro has in account because obviously he thinks the mc rib is of quality BBQ, haha! Maybe he should stick to McDonalds and their value meals. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items. Awesome addition to Ballard!

Awesome for Southern BBQ! I could taste Texas from Washington. Favorite BBQ sauces are the Spicy Habenero and sweet Kansas City. Can't elaborate enough how amazing these two sauces are. I wanted to buy them but it was out of stock. Friendly staff, smaller space but offers catering and delivery for large orders. I had pulled pork sandwich and it was the best! Overloaded with pork which I saved for next day left overs. Husband had the ribs and they were fall off the bone amazing! He loved them! Daughter had the sausage on Texas toast and she didn't like it but I tried it and it was great too. We got the fried macaroni and cheese, wasn't awesome but was good enough that it was worth the calories.....but probably wouldn't order it again. I'm NOT a coleslaw fan, but I am now....only if the coleslaw is from here. Wet, just enough vinegar flavor, just enough mayo, delicious! French fries and onion rings were great, tater tots were good too but no different than making them myself from frozen. Will definitely be back for BBQ when I have the craving and am in Seattle. If you're not in Seattle and are closer to Redmond, go to the Tipsy Cow where they use Boar's Nest BBQ sauce

A great BBQ spot. I highly recommend the Boss Hogg since you get to try their different barbecue meats, a few sides, and cornbread. They provide a lot of different barbecue sauces to suit all tastes. To my surprise the boneless fried chicken with the white dipping sauce is my favorite because it’s juicy, crispy, and just perfect. Also, the fried pickles are delightful.

If you like southern food this is the place to go! They have six different types of sauces from BBQ too spicy all representing different areas in the south. if you want catering this place can cater a whole rodeo. they've got pulled pork, smoked sausage, barbecue chicken, smoked cologna, hot links, boneless fried Chicken and ribs. I really like the seasoned and sweet potato fries. And make sure you go write in the bathroom blackboard walls! Zach is the GM and he gives great customer service and has a fun sense of humor.

The Boar’s Nest in Ballard is simply the BEST BBQ I’ve had on the west coast. I’d spent several months living in San Angelo and Ft. Worth TX years ago, and this reminds of what I’d enjoyed there during that time. If you can’t travel to TX or the southeast, the Boar’s Nest is definitely your best bet. Pulled pork, sausage, chicken plus all of the sides you would come to expect, to include my favorites fried pickles, and fried mac & cheese! That said, I’ve been here TOO often recently, so I gotta stay away from the fried goodies. Rather, I’m going with the pulled pork salad. It’s better for me, right? Everything goes better with BBQ sauce, even lettuce, and we’ve got Memphis, Texas, Spicy, Alabama, as well as North & South Carolina sauces to choose from! Be sure to visit when you are in Ballard!

I'm visiting from Denver. This place has some of the best pulled pork I've ever had. I'd highly recommend it.

Hands down the best BBQ I’ve had. Best French fries I’ve had. Best fried pickles I’ve had. The smoked sausage tastes like summer. Like it came fresh off a campfire. The pulled pork was tender and smokey. The guy working behind the counter was killing it, so many take out orders during this crazy time and he was staying on top of everything.

Been here twice, brisket the first time, pulled pork sandwich the second. Quality of the smoked meat is first rate, sides are very good. The coleslaw was crunchy and not overly sweet. Quantities - well, I left stuffed both times, and the prices quite reasonable. Ambience is just right for a BBQ joint, and the staff are super nice. Go ahead, give 'em a try!

A solid BBQ pork sandwich with a great selection of sauces. The Groupon deal makes this especially worthwhile.

Went here for lunch. Ordered the pulled pork sandwich (pork, coleslaw on top, bun), was delicious! Genuine smoked meat! I've smoked meat myself before and you know instantly when you taste meat that has actually been smoked with real wood, and this is it. Great flavor, big portion, they have a vareity of house made BBQ sauces that are all good (but not needed as the meat is great by itself). Overall great. Only downside is they don't serve brisket in the restaurant! (Brisket is only available for catering), brisket is such a staple of any BBQ it's sad they don't have it available in the restaurant, I'm sure it's delicious!

First rate southern barbecue at a good price with generous portions. Would suggest they turn on the a/c during the day though.
