This was not our first choice tonight. We were told to go to another place. The line was very long and we decided not to wait. We walked only 5 min away and found Rusty’s. Why is there no line in this place. I will say seeing the country fried steak on the menu was my personal hook to get me in the door. We walked in and the place has character and was put together with love. A lovely young lady seated us. Melissa became our server and the dinner was off to a perfect start. Also when we came in I noticed they had biscuits so I had to try that out. As a chef who grew up in Oklahoma you know I can do a biscuit throw down at any moment. I will tell you Rusty did not let me down. Yes I ordered my country fried steak. Wow a place in California that doesn’t think that is something you pull out of the freezer. The Brussel sprouts we’re crisp and extremely delicious. The other plate we ordered was the BBQ Brisket. OMG that was a trip down memory lane. Just know you can only get that on Wednesday nights . This was spot on and Extremely delicious. Melissa told us about all the other wonderful things we need to try. We are having a group of friends get together Friday night and guess where we will be going!!! Thank you Rusty and Melissa for giving us one of our new favorite places to eat in San Francisco. It is walking distance for us. We will save room for the banana putting on Friday night!!!!

As a transplant from the South I had all but given up on Southern food in the Bay. Then along came Rusty's. The short review is that Rusty's Southern is exceptional. Authentic Southern fare skillfully executed, with the type of respect for ingredient and food heritage you find in some of the best restaurants in the South. The expected plates were all great—buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken, pickled veggies, deviled eggs, chicken fried steak, pimento cheese, etc. It was also fantastic to see so many authentic ingredients on the menu like benne, hoppin' john, tomato gravy, pepper jelly, boiled peanuts, and grains from Anson Mills. The BBQ deserves a special mention because it's the ONLY good NC-style Q I've had on the West Coast. Hickory smoked, chopped Boston butt with a simple Lexington sauce. It doesn't quite reach the heights of some of the best pits in the Carolinas, but hey, you do what you can with building codes =). If you like pork BBQ nothing else even comes close in the Bay. Food aside, everything else at Rusty's is on point as well. Chill vibe, friendly atmosphere, and a great bar selection. The restaurant is perfect for a date, a meal w/ the fam, or grabbing dinner in a group. Keep doing good work Rusty & co—you've made this Southern kid a lot less homesick.

My visit to Rushy's Southern was ok. The menu was small and only 4 meals you can select from and around 7 breakfast items. I ordered the BBQ sandwich with fries and it was good. My wife had the chicken sandwich and did not enjoy it she said the batter on the chicken was good but the meat was not flavored. One if our friends ordered a breakfast salad and enjoy it. The place is small and cozy. The employees are nice and friendly and kept the place cleaned. The meals was $15 each.

New spot for the family. The presentation of the food was great, but the taste didn’t match what was in front of me. The only thing that was tasty were the biscuits, shrimp from the grits, and the cream kale. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was pretty laid back.

This is seriously killer southern bbq, but with the hipster/upscale delivery of a typical San Francisco restaurant. The service were nice. The highlight is the food. We had the gumbo, fried chicken, and pork shoulder, and it was all great.

One of my fav southern restaurants in SF downtown Rusty’s southern, serves Especially for Carolina style, Fried chicken made with Chicken thigh tastes more tender and juicy, perfect spicy. Grits is very comforting!!! What really makes this great is two condiments made based on family recipe!!! And hushpuppies is really good. I’ve never seen any Home-made sauce and seasoning so special and appetizing. Give it A try!!!

My wife is from North Carolina, and I have been visiting there each summer for twenty years. Each trip we head out to the beach and get Eastern Carolina BBQ. Rusty's definitely has captured the essence of the food there. Eastern Carolina BBQ is different than Western Carolina BBQ which is influenced more by Memphis BBQ. It is a vinegar based sauce on pulled pork. Rusty's dining room is comfortable with enough space between the tables that you don't feel like your part of the conversation going on at the next table. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is good too! The biscuits had a good crust with a tender middle, and the pepper jelly was great(it goes well on the hushpuppies too). The fried green tomatoes where done very well. Their fried chicken was very crunchy. The mixed vegetable bowl was tasty too. The coleslaw was great too. There were a couple of minor misses. The fries that came with the burger were too salty and not crispy. The BBQ was a bit too smokey, the delicious sauces it came with were no match of the heavy smoke flavor. Rusty's is definitely a place to get a good southern meal.

Oh my Lordy Lou this place is fantastic. Being from Virginia, I pride myself on some level of knowing good bbq when I taste it. SF doesn’t have many options. But this one takes the cake for the best overall experience, delicious southern food and spicy bloody marys. We were a large group easily accommodated at one of their larger communal tables. Literally everything we ordered was great, with the fried chicken sandwich being a knockout.

I got the fried chicken and my boy got the chicken fried steak so we split & shared... Bommmmb breading! Good truffle fries! The Brussel sprouts had a spice on them I wasn't really digging but the collards had good chunks of meat! Great spot!

Very good typical southern food. I got the chicken biscuits and the gravy was so good. The chicken was good too but had way too much breading and not enough actual meat. The side salad was nicely dressed.

Just moved to an office in the neighborhood and this was our first choice for Friday lunch and it was an excellent choice. They had both brunch and lunch items as well as drinks/cocktails available. My friend and I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and the chicken fried steak sandwich and traded halves with each other. Both came out piping hot, super crispy and full of fried deliciousness. We both opted for fries which were crispy and seasoned. All the staff were very friendly and we'll definitely be back.
