We stopped into Shilo’s for a lunch and was splendid. The service was stellar. The food was excellent, particularly the root beer, rye bread, kielbasa, pretzels and Reuben fritters. The restaurant is very nostalgic neatly decorated with history. I would love to try their breakfast menu. I would definitely come here again. Highly recommended!
We had a terrific breakfast there the other day. It's a marvelous old place with tons of character.
We got there a few minutes after it opened on Sunday and it was almost full. We ordered a schnitzel with egg, it comes with hash browns and a biscuit & gravy. We also ordered a cream pancake and a potato pancake. We shared everything and it was more than enough for two people.
The schnitzel was delicious, crisp & tasty. Egg was perfect. biscuit was light as a feather. The cream and potato pancakes were marvelous too. The hash browns were average, but nothing special.
I'd have loved to have tasted their home made Root Beer but I gave up sugar a few years ago. Maybe next time I can have a sip or two as Root Beer has been a favorite of mine forever. I'd also love to try their Reuben with their home made mustard too. Next time we'll go for lunch. This is a place that's definitely worth a visit!

We were able to walk to this location for breakfast and it was a nice walk. The restaurant displays the date of its origin, 1917, in tile on the front steps. The doors and much of the inside stood still in time. I enjoyed looking around at the history.
The food: we had the avocado toast and the schnitzel dish…it was delicious. We cleaned our plates. The coffee was good also.
The service: I can’t rave about the service but it wasn’t terrible. Just needs a touch of improvement. It seemed that our plates may have gotten lost in the back until we asked for them to be checked on. We, along with the other tables beside us, waited for some time on our checks. Friendliness was not completely absent and the lack is somewhat understandable because she was busy but maybe some encouragement in this area would boost the tips. Breakfast patrons are more likely to overtip.
I purchased 2 bottles of their root beer and it was delicious. So enjoyed it.
Highly recommend for part of your San Antonio experience.
I highly recommend this place for breakfast when in San Antonio , you might have to wait a little bit but it is worth it if you're really hungry I recommend Papa Fritz breakfast, 2 eggs hash browns or grits your choice of ham , bacon or sausage links with either a biscuit or toast , their Bloody Mary's are great mildly spicy and refreshing. My wife had French toast with bacon , one of my son's had the chicken and biscuits with gravy and my other son had the pancakes, ham and eggs breakfast, It's a busy place but our server stayed on top of things. This was our second time having breakfast here and will likely return on future trips.
I consider this to be one of the better priced restaurants, much more affordable, and conveniently located near the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. I have never had German food before, so I was very excited for the experience. The service was all right, the food was very delicious. I got the chicken schnitzel sandwich, chili beef hotdog, and chicken with biscuits and gravy. We also tried the pea soup that they were famous for, not gonna lie, it sort of tasted like baby food. We had the root beer, some coffee, and a German beer, which was very refreshing. I highly recommend, good spot if you want to try something different.
Great location as it allows easy access to the river walk. Nice and cool for a hot summer day. Not very handicap accessible through the entrance. It is family friendly with high chairs for children.
I ordered the Taste of Germany platter and all of the fish was superb! Mushroom soup was flavorful and meat was great! Purple cabbage was nicely done and some of the best potato salad I’ve had!
Reuben sandwich was generous portion and comes with a sauce that tastes like a German style Raising Cane’s sauce which I loved!
Only regret is not having a bigger stomach to try out the cheesecake- it looked delicious!! Highly recommend and will come again when in San Antonio!!!
Absolutely delicious! Our first stop when we got to San Antonio yesterday!! If I could give this 10 stars I would. The food and service were amazing ! The minute we stepped into the restaurant, Savannah took great care of us and was so kind. The wait was worth it. Our waiter, Joseph was hilarious and such an amazing waiter. I highly recommend it.
We ate lunch here on 6/27 in San Antonio, TX. They were able to accommodate our family group of 12 at 3 separate tables, due to the lunch hour crowd. We had great food, several got the German sampler platter, which they said was delicious. Someone had recommended this restaurant to us for their famous root beer. It was delicious and well worth the trip. They had a photographer come around and take photos of each table, with which they gave us a small free copy and then had other copies of the photos for sale. We chose to just get the free copies. The service and food were awesome. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone that visits the San Antonio area!
Oldest restaurant in San Antonio from what I understand. The family sold it, but the current owners have kept the traditional German items.
The pricing was very reasonable considering it's located right in the heart of downtown. They offer breakfast all day and the architecture looks original to era of the building.
My wife and I always go to local restaurants when we travel - NO CHAINS. We love historical places or a place that strikes us as entirely different. Schilo’s fits the bill!
We had breakfast and enjoyed every bite. I ordered the potato cakes. They come with homemade applesauce, which is tart, and sour cream. That may seem odd, but it was delicious! Give it a try.
Our server, Heather was so gracious and personable. We asked about the local coffee. She went and had some bagged for is and brought it to our table. Great service!
