I've been regularly visiting Urban Chestnut since my arrival in STL, and I have been met with nothing but a warm staff, scrumptious food options, and a solid range of beers (the ones that they rotate on tap).
Delightful food! Great beer options. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Only downfall was that I didn't see much indoor seating. We were lucky to get a table, but shortly after all tables were full. Looks like they definitely have a large outdoor bier garden type space, that did be fun in the summer months. But a smaller space for winter, is what the situation seemed to be during our January visit.
February 2020 Update
I much prefer this location over the UBC beirhall, as it is the original UBC location.
The copy for Schnickelfritz describes this as a Weissbeir using primarily white wheat in the grain bill. Beer needs barley, yet pale unroasted barley.
I was not pleased with Schnickelfritz the first few times I tried it. Something changed. The style overlaps to the point of being hefeweizen. Nestle there to share space with Hoegaarden and on US soil Celis White. (Both are available for you to compare.)
Such a Schnickelfritz must use maybe two or three yeast strains.
So, while at the big loud echo-y UBC beirhall, the recipes do evolve, as with Urbane Underdog a bit.
Wholly superior to Bluewood Brewing Hefeweizen. Wafly Shlafly can't touch this with their terrible cardboard beers.
I'm pleased with the gradual evolution. Schnickelfritz is a stalwart and vanguard UBC offering.
Yet I like the quiet original UBC location. Almost five stars over the other location.
Yet also try the URB for tasty taste tests and slightly cheaper beers by a $ or so. The roasty pizza is a quasi-New York style yet well yeasty leavened crust and quality execution in the weirdly routed assembly line in a small space.
Great place for a quick lunch and a long beer. Friendly bunch of guys. Outdoor seating available and bean bag toss. Limited free parking on site. Meter parking on the street. Flagship beer is Zwickel.
It’s trivia night on Monday and the place was packed. Good atmosphere. The spinach and artichoke dip, nachos, pretzels and smoked salmon sandwich all were very good. Not very fond of the potato and leek soup though.
I love the patio. Delightful food, especially the pretzel is my favorite. They have great beer options. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.
We had a graduation event here and it was spectacular! No other way to describe it. Thank you Adam and the incredible staff. Top notch. Read this and find a reason to host a party there
Great spot, great atmosphere and awesome staff. Natasha, Bess, and Fox are awesome people…def have to try the wings here.
The bartender today was awesome. He made the start of our brewery hoping day start great. We will def end our day/night here.
Came in Friday evening, they had some live music playing. Their pretzels are always on point, my friend got the nachos and they looked really good. All the UBCB locations are pretty cool, this one is a bit smaller than the one down in Tower Grove but it's got a different vibe too.
