Saltbox was everything I though it would be. The type of dips that have are different, but the staff was excellent and very knowledgeable. Everything we ate was excellent, if you are a traditionalist and like raw, try the Katama Bay, and the original fried oysters were some of the freshest oysters I have ever eaten, that weren't from a sack. For a Cajun guy to eat oysters in Virginia and love them.... Is all you need to know!
Outstanding! My mother and I dined here for lunch. Beautiful, jazzy atmosphere! We both had the crab cake sandwich. We are from Baltimore and we are serious about crab cakes. This was far and beyond the BEST ever! Thank you for your vision, Mr. Tlusty. We will be back!
So in between AAU basketball games, we decided to have brunch at the Saltbox and oh what a treat it was. I ordered the mushroom hash, my husband ordered the seafood quiche. Let me tell you... From the fresh ingredients used to the innovated recipes, this spot is the truth! If you are in the Richmond area, the Saltbox is hosting a mother's day buffet! Do yourself a favor and try it out!
The oysters were great, the cocktails were REALLY good, our server tried
the ambiance here is more upscale than expected. it's a white linen, hushed tones kind of place, NOT peanut shells on the floor kind of place.
The rawbar lived up to the hype. I could still be there eating! The fried oysters were delicious too. Make your reservations for weekend dinner dates, or show up early and sit at the bar- my personal favorite!
My husband and I had dinner here and had a really nice meal. All of the staff was very courteous and helpful. They accommodated my request for a cocktail as a mocktail at a reduced price, and it was delicious! My husband had normal cocktails and they both were really good - we especially liked tangier handshake. We got roasted oysters and they were great, as was the scallops app. I am gluten free and our server was very knowledgeable about the menus options - I ended up getting the crab cakes which were great! My husband got the shrimp Mac and enjoyed it. The gluten free peanut butter pie was the perfect topper!
We will be back! Please don’t get rid of the happy hour - we are looking forward to coming for it!
The SaltBox has some really great selections. While the food focus is oysters (they have, at least, 10 different kinds) I had a fantastic entree of shrimp and grits. The sausage gumbo at the base had some heat, the grits were creamy and the shrimp were large and perfectly cooked. Others at the table had buffalo oysters (think buffalo chicken with bivalves) and raw oysters in the shell (also excellent). We ended our meal with an amazing bourbon pecan pie with some kind of ultra creamy frozen sauce... not exactly ice cream... maybe better. They have 10 beers on tap and and good selection of wines. Great experience for a new restaurant. The host told us they'd only been open for a month and we didn't notice any growing pains. I should add that the fish and chips were really good and our wait person had a lot of personality.
Food was excellent. Wife had the steak, it was seasoned perfect and cooked exactly as ordered. The mushrooms and onions were so delicious. We had an order of hush puppies that had an amazing sauce. My daughter had the crab cake sandwich which was so delicious. My mother-in-law had the biggest Po' boy sandwich outside of New Orleans.
The restaurant is very attractive, plenty of cozy seating. You can see them cook the food from where we sat. They also have plenty of outside seating.
The staff, all were friendly and welcoming. The waitresses were on top of everything.
Oh and the desert was superb!

Delicious meal for our family of 3- our 10 year old daughter loved everything she ordered. Excellent service. Crab cake sandwich was so simple and tasty- seriously the best French fries I have ever had- they were so good that my husband ordered some for himself. They were made to order. We will definitely be back!
