We had another amazing meal here over the weekend. The fire place was lit, we called ahead for the famous halfway house string beans! I have food allergies and the are always able to accommodate my food requests. This place is a hidden gem❤️ great for a party, as they have a private room. Wonderful for a family dinner, or a date. We loved the atmosphere, the service, and all of the food. The cinnamon rolls were great, very tasty. It is a beautiful old house and the history of it is great to know.

My husband and I had a Wonderful anniversary dinner here. The food was absolutely delicious. It was a bit pricey but well worth it! We'll definitely be returning with friends and family!

It was a hot Friday in Virginia and my wife remembered a place nearby to where we were; halfway between Richmond and Petersburg. Yes, it was still there. We arrived close to half hour from lunch closing of 2 PM. Not a problem. Another table was just receiving their big fried chicken salads and another of the restaurant's equally delicious looking salads when we sat down in the cool basement dining room. Great little hot cinnamon roles or caramel roles were immediately served with our often refilled beverages. Only one waitress but she knew how to serve in that gracious Southern way. My wife had to have the Virginia crab cakes as she was raised on them. She shared a bite and I gave her one of my perfect scallops served in a perfect white sauce. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed their grilled salmon and chicken pot pie. One piece of peanut butter pie with delicious coffee made our day. How all of this great food comes out of a logged cabin kitchen a few steps from the entrance to the dining room is a mystery that will have to wait for another visit; although a tour was offered. The first floor was a step back in time that is available for parties and receptions. I was more interested in the history of the door that opened to receive luggage off the top of stage coaches and the stairs that went up to the 8 bedrooms on the top floor that no longer accommodates travelers on the Richmond-Petersburg Road. Stop for the food even if you aren't interested in history.
Incredible home made rolls and desserts. Good food. A little uncomfortable as one eats in basement. Once fireplace lit, it felt better.
Excellent food, service, and drinks .shld be considered fine dining and it is so worth the cost, plus you ate in a historic building

All time favorite. This place is truly a gem in the rough - a little south of the city in a bit of a run down area, but the history and atmosphere of this place is great. In the basement of an old halfway house (hence the name.....you get a different feel just walking in. Not many choices but you dont need them, everything is always devine. I have been here four or five times and have NEVER been disappointed with anything. Steaks are the best i have ever had, melt in your mouth good. Pricey but totally worth the trip!
Always excellent. I've never disappointed with this little gem. It's in a rundown area, but the charm and history behind this establishment is only surpassed by the food, which has always been very good, with a waitstaff warm and attentive.

A bit of history and a lot of flavor. This place was great. Staff wad friendly and let us explore, the setting is one of a kind, the atmosphere is fine dining but intimate. The kitchen let us peak in and the food, the food wad fantastic. From scallops to Snapper to the truffle cake I have no complaints besides not being able to finish everything. I'd recommend. The price is exactly what you'd expect and for the slice of history this place provides perhaps even not enough. Great evening. Great food.
Had a wonderful early Christmas dinner with old friends. This was my first visit and it matched perfectly with what I was hoping. The atmosphere was exactly what I dreamt of-dim candlelit, cosy room overflowing with charm; calm and serene. The service was excellent. Our waiter Brandon was attentive but not obtrusive, professional and knowledgeable.
I ordered the Specials lobster bisque and it was the best I've ever eaten. For my meal I ordered the Filet Mignon with crab cake and it was outstanding; basic food cooked exceptionally and exactly as requested.
I'm in agreement with Ms Lora Newell who said, "A great historic landmark with a fine dining restaurant. The staff were excellent and attentive without being intrusive.....A little more innovation with the menu and attention to detail in the kitchen are needed. This place is a diamond in the rough, a few tweaks and it could be amazing. " Although the one server was quite efficient, another server would make the dining room's experience more in line with the price of the meal. Hot rolls were 🤯!!
We went for the first time the other night for a Christmas party and we loved it. You can't beat the atmosphere and ambiance. The food was delicious, from appetizers to dessert. Huge portions of food and everyone brought food home. Nobody left hungry! We got the special roasted red pepper soup and the onion soup to start and highly recommend both! The only downside is that I was wearing a lightweight dress and was freezing inside! But that's to be expected for such an old building. Bring a coat and your appetite here. You won't be sorry. We will be back soon!
Visited for the first time and was very impressed. We ordered the steak / crab cake / twice baked potato and seafood pasta. Both were fabulous and flavorful. Also a big nod to the free cinnamon rolls / rolls, and our complementary apple crispy (due to celebrating our anniversary). Our server Heather was so lovely and attentive. She made us feel celebrated. Will definitely visit again for a special occasion!
Ambiance is that you are eating in a 200+ year old basement very romantic but very dark. The wine was lovey. The roll and cinnamon bun were wonderful. My twice baked potato was very dry. My scallops au gratin had their “foot or side muscle” still attached on 1/2 the scallops which should never happen as this is prep cleaning 101. Server was very gracious when I showed her and took 10% off bill. Didn’t order an entree but would try the place again.
Had our company Christmas dinner here, 7 people. Food was amazing, service mediocre. Waiter had zero personality and we had to ask for things multiple times, he also disappeared for long periods of time. Other than that, food was very good! Do not
mind paying the prices but would expect much better service from waitstaff. Will definitely be back but maybe ask for another server.
Outstanding meal and good service in a very historic building. I enjoyed braised beef tips over rice pilaf with steamed green beans (but should have ordered the rack of lamb), and my wife enjoyed Chicken caprese, with a twice baked potato side. Onion soup appetizer and fresh spinach salad with bacon vinaigrette dressing were nice add on. The servers were excellent. We will be back.
I was only there for desert. I had the apple and ice cream. Very good. I didn't eat any main dishes. This is the opposite of fast food quality and cost. You will spend 50-75 per person for main course. A friend told mw the crab cakes are excellent.
Wonderful service! Very attentive, professional. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to have you as a guest at the establishment. Dinner was excellent! Portions very plentiful and expeey prepared. So happy we chose here for my birthday dinner tonight! Thank you for a great evening!
