Breakfast sandwich is great and the price is right. Coffee isn’t the best in the city but it’s not bad by any means.
Complaint: staff can be short with customers. They tend to have Cholula but only one bottle, and anytime they have Tapatio it’s almost empty and rotten. How hard is it to get hot sauce? 🤣
The space is cozy. Lots of wood and brick. They set tables outside and it’s covered by the building above. I’ll keep visiting when I’m near by but customer service is so important. I wish they’d be a tad nicer.

I’m a tourist from SC. I ate at Grendel’s every morning during my trip. The food is GREAT, and so are the lattes. I particularly liked the egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches.
Staff is friendly, too.
We were at Portland Tennis Center for a tournament and we wanted to find a place for coffee. We found them on the map and decided to give them a try.
The shop has a welcoming atmosphere. They have some unique flavored coffees that are amazing! Some of the best coffee I've ever had! Go out of your way to give them your business!! 🙂
I went during off-peak hours and had a great experience with friendly staff. The Mayan Mocha is interesting and delicious of you want to change up your coffee routine, and the humble deli sandwich (which you fill out a paper form to order -- fun 😊) was prepared with care.
I went in October and they went all out on the macabre decorations. But perhaps the most important detail was the shoegaze background music, which sets the tone of the vibe. Do recommend.
A quiet location, with efficient staff who make great coffee. This was a nice relaxed way to start each day of my holiday in Portland - the coffee is properly delicious and the staff know their job without fawning or being sycophantic. A nice, low key coffee shop!
A very cozy coffee place right close to a few hotels/motels on Burnside. The coffee (simple brew that I always get) was tasty. The best part was the toasted bagel, they really put some attention and effort in making that the best toasted bagel with cream cheese that I've had in a while. Thank you!
Awesome little old school coffee house! The people might even be better than the coffee!
Nice local coffee shop with a variety of sandwiches, some danish, and a friendly vibe. Many of the customers seemed like regulars and were greeted warmly by the baristas.
Stopped by while visiting from NJ and omg they are the best! They have the best coffee and food and staff is so sweet. Would go back to Portland just for Grendel’s!
