Perfect lunch spot and great area for a casual business meeting! Definitely seems like a popular area for lunch downtown. I went here for a business meeting. We had placed a reservation because of how busy it would be. It is a very unique and authentic spot. It used to be a hotel back in the day and they have kept a lot of the old architecture which was cool. The menu provided a wonderful selection and options of soups, salads and sandwiches. They have a lunch special where you can do half & half of each. I had the Italian and the soup of the day. Delicious. In my opinion it is an better version and an official restaurant compared to something like Panera Bread. Good environment for casual meetings or just a nice lunch out during the work day.

Visited this wonderful place around the corner from Hilton Hotel as I was visiting the city for the first time. Michael was our server and he was the best EVER. Funny, witty, sarcastic and a delight. LOVED the tomatoe soup. Went back the next day for another cup. I do wish they had bowls as the cup was not enough. Lol

Simple and really delicious food in a very nice setting that looks like they're going for a 20's World Fair theme. Everything we ordered was quite tasty: hanger steak, delicata squash salad, and butternut squash risotto. Service was on point and unintrusive. We also tried a cocktail, the Seelbach, but thought it was just ok. Overall an excellent spot for a nice, quiet dinner with an unusual but very cool vibe.

I adore the picnic house. The quality of the food is always excellent and I love their changing menu. I'm not a big fan of the entrees and sides being ala carte, however. I think the picnic style choice is good for salads, soups, and sandwiches, but I preferred previous menus where entrees had set, complimentary side items. The choice is nice, but ultimately the chef is going to know the best food pairings, not me.

I came here for a quick lunch while I was in Portland and it was really delicious! They have a fun system of mixing and matching sandwiches, salads and soup and I chose to do a "half" shaved turkey, sharp cheddar, green apple, arugula salad sandwich and their blue cheese and bacon salad. I sat at the bar and the service was excellent. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland.

The food and atmosphere are both unique and fun. Although the menu is not extensive, everything we tried was delicious. My husband and I did the "Have a Picnic" special and shared a soup, the apple turkey sandwich, and the vegetable gnocchi - all highly recommended! Michael, our server, was very accommodating to my food allergies and answered all our questions. He even made notes of my allergies for the staff preparing our meal, and then chatted with us about the history of the restaurant space. This is a great dinner stop for out of town visitors or locals!

Found this place by accident(last summer), thank god I did. I came in not to long before closing and right off the bat i fell in love with the atmosphere. Decor and the array of lights was very inviting. Sat at the bar, and was greeted by one badass bartender. Just watching him do work made me ready to enjoy my visit. He made me a upcoming cocktails off a later menu and it was perfect. Had the lamb chops, with mint cliantro jelly, a baked potato and a gorgonzola salad. Definitely was the perfect meal. I'll definitely keep this as my go to place everytime I come back to Portland!

10/10 food, 6/10 decor. Attentive service. Picnic house's design aesthetic doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Letterpress dies on the walls, checks delivered in old books, cheesy IKEA-looking birch wallpaper and a French street-side cafe vibe, complete with shrubbery, paired with burger joint-esque black and white check parchment paper on the plates. It's pretty much the worst of 'trying too hard' from a design point of view. On the other hand the food was all well-thought out; flavors were well-matched and all of it was frankly delicious. Charcutterie was varied and innovative- the duck fat candle was a nice touch. Brussels sprouts and broccoli were crispy and perfect; the lemon aioli elevated the dish. Tomato soup was exactly what it needed to be. At 7:15 on a Saturday night the restaurant was quiet though, probably to its detriment in a city that loves waiting in line for food, no matter how mediocre. Overall, I'd eat here again in a heartbeat, but probably wouldn't take out of town guests. While the food is good, the vibe isn't the most exciting that Portland has to offer.

Popular and trendy spot downtown Portland. It was relatively busy for lunch and service reflected. Chips served with lunch instead of French fries. Sandwiches were good. Bill comes in a book which is a unique touch.

We love to go here when we are in Portland. It's a little on the pricey side, but delicious! I love that I can make a picnic when I'm feeling indecisive. Last time, I chose tomato soup, a salad with some Gorgonzola, and fried Brussel sprouts/broccoli. It was SO good. Next time, I'd probably leave off the sauce on the Brussel sprouts/broccoli, but still YUM. My husband's flat iron steak was also delicious, although I feel like I got way more food for the $$.
