Bourbon ball, baked alaska two of my favorites there. Best for a sweet tooth. Enjoy polite service with some good music. In the heart of Portland downtown,
Just a brilliant venue to come for desert. And the only downside is the wait given it's tremendous popularity. And while the offerings may at first appear "standard", the bar is set high meaning you'll enjoy every mouthful...
Always fun , good food, people watching, menu and waiters. Always a good choice😺😎😺. Evan street musicians, doggie watching, but no kitties. We'll have to bring our short hair Persians
A Portland fixture. Papa Haydn is known for their exemplary desserts and for good reason. Best carrot cake I've ever had. Their French onion soup is wonderful as well. Never had a bad meal here.
Always love Papa Haydn, this long-standing dessert place serves up many varieties of delicious desserts.
The last trip we were there in the summer, we had baked Alaska, peach cobbler and chocolate cube.
The chocolate cube was delectable -- a thin chocolate shell box housed with chocolate mousse with a side of vanilla ice cream.
The chocolate box was made with single origin Cordillera Cocuy chocolate which was dark, bitter and brittle; contrasted with the eggy, light, creamy, sweet, vanilla ice cream and buffered by this rich chocolate mousse, a true chocolate lover's dessert.
The baked Alaska had banana ice cream with layers of dolce de leche, vanilla sponge cake, chocolate ganache and bruleed meringue as how it should look in this classic old style dessert.
The banana ice cream was delicious and the meringue was nicely chewy.
Although it was not as good as the special order baked Alaska at El Gaucho steak house, this was a great attempt.
Finally the seasonal dessert at the time, peach blackberry cobbler was delicious, piping hot, buttery goodness with a hint of tang from the berries and a hint of rose flavor.
Papa Haydn is a great dessert place that I wish we had in Seattle!
Papa Hayden has always been a classy and delightful spot to visit! Historically known for their delicious desserts, but their food is tasty too!

Very good cheesecake. Had the best cheesecake when I was visiting Portland, and this place sold it to me. I would eefinitely recommend trying here if you haven't already.
Great service and great desserts. I would come back again for the desserts.
PAPA PLEASED. If you find yourself strolling along 23rd and happen to have a sweet tooth needing a fix then I would definitely recommend Papa H. Before you walk in the door I suggest you do a few things: prep your palate, adjust your belt, and roll your sleeves up, because you will be in for an explosion of flavortastic- sweetliciousness(new word!).
The environment was nice and relaxing, yet socially exciting at the same-time on the sunday afternoon that we went. Not knowing what to expect, I headed through the doors and to my surprise like a glowing box of treasure I got my first glimpse of the dessert showcase! I must have looked like one of those sucker-fish you see in fish tanks stuck to the glass eating algae? Before I knew it my wife was prying me off of the case with that look of embarrassment. The staff was friendly and attentive, and most of all helpful when it came time to deciding what dessert to choose. I was equally pleased with not only presentation, but overall execution of the plate. My wife and I (usually sharing) took one bite and decided we would have to battle if anyones fork traveled across the plate line. Very good experience, I will definitely go back for more.
Dessert Heaven. This is an off-the-charts lunch and dessert place - ideal for that 3pm-in-the-afternoon coffee or beer with a banana coconut cream pie slice the size of your head. Clean, great service, free Wi-Fi and not very expensive - on Nob Hill. Wonderful! Highly recommended.
The whole experience was incredible. It wasn't just that the food was delicious but the staff were super friendly and welcoming. We had a great time eating delicious food and the best dessert I've had in a while and on top of that, a super friendly and accommodating staff. Their desserts are amazing, the cakes are baked to perfection with the right balance of moisture and density. We had a great time and definitely will be back again if visiting the area.
Interesting combination of a bar, cafe, restaurant, with a very bistro kind of vibe. Pleasant, comfortable environment, with a very upscale feel, full of natural light. Eclectic menu choices with a lot of good choices, and everything we tried was excellent. Croque monsieur was huge, and unlike what I've had in France, but delicious nonetheless. Service is friendly, but we had a long wait before getting our food. The place has such a nice feel, we didn't really care. Deserts are exceptional, as was the cappuccino. We will definitely go back.
They were able to get us a table in 15 minutes. The service was so friendly and helpful, especially on a busy Christmas weekend. Our food was amazing. My Croque Monsier (ham, gruyere, dijoninaise, grilled parmesan-crusted broche bread) was scrumptious. Our daughter, who is gluten-free, went with the Salmom Apple Salad (pan seared king salmon, mixed greens, gala apples, honey roasted pecans, fontina cheese, pomegranate, pumpkin seads, and apple maple vinegrette dressing) She said it was the best Salad she has ever had! My husband had the BBQ Brisket Sandwich (braised and smoked beef brisket, chipotle, clowslaw, grand central brioche bum, with fries) he ate the whole thing! It was delicious.
We shouldn't have, but we did have dessert. They shared the Cre'meux for two (flourless chocolate torte with toasted Italian meringue) and I had the Cherry Bomb ( chocolate cake, liquor soaked cherry center, chocolate glaze) with a cup of their home made Caramel ice cream. These were absolutely sinfully yummy! Definitely make a stop here. We will for sure!
Papa Haydn is one of the best special occasion restaurants you can go to in Portland for a nice lunch or cozy dinner. The jazz on Sundays and Wednesdays makes this place special within its own right but the cakes and desserts sets it apart from all others. This place is definitely pricey which is why I wouldn't come here consistently. The portions for some dishes can be small and leaving you wanting a bit more but overall, I absolutely this restaurant and will be coming back for as long as it's open!
If you have never been, definitely go. The desserts are done absolutely amazing and taste soo good. Pictured Lemon Tart, Cacao de ore, and Raspberry Gatue
Can’t speak for service as we ordered delivery. One of the best desserts I have had! The apricot cake was so delicious! We tried 6 different desserts (don’t judge 😂, only took pictures of 3) that was my favorite. The chocolate cake is also very good. My friend enjoyed the lemon cake not pictured, but thought it could use a little more lemon flavor.
Raspberry gateau is wonderful, awesome! Rich chocolate with fresh raspberry!
Chicken sandwich is beyond my expectation, crispy outside, juicy and tender inside, one bit you know you are having great food here.
The staff are nice and warm, Edgar is a great guy, he is also smiling and caring, makes me feel so welcomed and warm, appreciate his great service!
Beautiful environment.
Phenomenal desserts but don’t pass is the Croque monsieur with French onion soup! So delicious! They have a wide selection of top notch desserts so anything you pick will be amazing. I love the chocolate layer cake. Yum! They have multiple locations so you can find one on your side of town.
One of my favorite places in Portland. Enjoyed 45th celebrating menu. Always great!
Went there for our anniversary dinner.
Have been enjoy the cakes from Papa Hayden for years but this is the first time we decide to try out their dinner menu.
Here are my thoughts:
1. Drinks
Drink menu is decent. Cocktails selections are quite good, good number of beers on tap, wine listing is average.
2. Food
Has a good coverage of global cruise from French, Italian, Japanese to American. On the plus side, you can pretty much get what you are looking for, but on the downside, you might not get the most authentic food from that region.
3. Dessert
Easily the best dessert in town. Hands down.
We ordered some tuna poke, French onion soup and Croque monsieur. The cheese in the French onion soup was not melted which was disappointing. The rest were quite good actually.
Service was good. Our waiter was very tentative and friendly.
Overall 4 star. And price was reasonable.
