The "Queen of Soul Food" lives in Harlem, her kingdom has reigned since 1962. Come on a weekday and sit at the counter to watch the place buzz, or get a table on Sundays for their "gospel brunch" to really experience the heart of this vital neighborhood. Prices have skyrocketed in recent years due to its popularity, and to be honest there is plenty of good fried chicken in the area, but there is still something here at Sylvia's that makes an impression.

I have eaten here many times it’s really good quality food. The staff are lovely, the restaurant has a warm atmosphere.
People who know good southern food come here
Stopped in on Sunday on our trip to NYC. We took our kids and it was great, good food and an even better experience. I had the chicken (fried) any waffles my wife eggs and sausage. You have to try the home fries they're really good. My son wanted biscuits and gravy (which they don't serve) but our server hooked him up with some of the smothered chicken gravy to do it up for him which he loved. My daughter's birthday was a few days prior and she along with the other June birthdays was serenaded but the songstress in doing the live gospel music. She had her customary Mac and cheese which was pretty good also.
If you’ve never been then you you need to stop by Sylvia’s soul food restaurant in Harlem. The food is excellent and the service is good considering how busy they are. I don’t eat Soul food often, but when I do, I expect it to be good! Sylvia’s met my expectations, and the late, great Sylvia topped of the excellent dinner with great cornbread.
I’m not from “the north,” the Midwest, the west coast or the east coast. I’m a southern boy. I will tell you I’ve never had better fried chicken in my life. IN MY LIFE.
This has been on my food hot list for years, but never had the chance to go. The meal was fantastic. The portions were large enough to share an entree. We did an entree and a side of fried chicken breast - smothered .... wow! Dip the amazing cornbread in the gravy - forget about it!! Prices were on the high side for me - combo - $27.00 with two sides. We had fried chicken (yum) and ribs (very tangy). Sides - Mac n Cheese (wow), collard greens, black eyed peas and garlic mashed potatoes (excellent). The deserts were to die for!! We had banana pudding, sweet potato pie and peach cobbler and shared between 4!!!!
All in all, a heart attack accelerant!

We ate at lunch at Sylvia Restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. A few of our NYC friends had recommended the restaurant to us, so my friends I thought we check it out. We were hungry from shopping all day, so were glad to sit for a bite to eat and to rest our feet. We looked over the menu and were confused at first. We couldn't decide was the menu Jamaican, Caribbean, or Down-Home Southern American. We simply wanted to try some new items we could not get back at home. I love seafood, so quite naturally I was drawn to the fish. I ordered tilapia, but was shocked to find out it came with grits. My meal was cooked just the way I ordered it. It was like eating breakfast and dinner at the same time, BUT for lunch. One of my friends ordered collards with pork chops. You could smell the spices in them. They looked, smelled, and tasted delicious. Everyone's food was delicious. The service was good, and we enjoyed looking at the photos on the wall. Our waitress was very conversational, so she was able to provide us with some history about the restaurant and the pictures. Our only complaint: the restaurant space inside was a tad bit cramped for the amount of people being served. Other than that, we had great time and enjoyed our food. We decided the restaurant was a Amerijamaicaribbean, Down-Home Southern Restaurant.
Sylvia's is marvellous! The southern food and hospitality is vibing in Harlem! From the moment we arrived the service was great! Everything we ordered made me feel like i'd fell deep into the south! As for fried chicken, there is a reason why the locals are lining up out the door. Sides were also delicious, loved the collard greens and mac&cheese. If you're in NYC head to Sylvia's you wont be disappointed.
I dined at this restaurant with a school group and even though we were served family style, it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The staff was so kind and treated us all like family and all of our needs were taken care of. We went on a holiday and they all made sure we had a great day. After the meal, we got to sing for the staff and we got to buy some of their famous hot sauce. Even after returning home, we ordered a case of their corn bread mix and would make it all the time with our meals. It was so delicious and one of the best things made at home.i would highly recommend the fried chicken. whenever I think of traditional comfort food I think back to my trip to New York and Sylvia's and how I wish there were more restaurants like that around where I am. I'd also recommend buying some of their mixes to make things at your own kitchen!!
The fried chicken with that hot sauce was beyond me! The waffle with salted butter and syrup went well with the chicken. I over the service, there was live music and it was great. My new favorite place in NY
I felt like I was brought back to friends bbq cook outs. Was not expecting the home taste, most restaurants have commercial taste. I really enjoyed the shrimp it was the best I’ve had. When I tried the ribs, collard greens, Mac n cheese, yams, sassy rice I was like this is all delicious and a refined nostalgic taste I had not tasted in a while. I will say the banana pudding and coconut cake are sweet but that’s the style and I enjoyed eating it as well. I definitely will return and had that thought just from the initial cornbread and shrimp. Thank you.
Celebrating my Dad's birthday at Sylvia's for brunch was ideal. We didn't have to wait long for a table. He ordered the smothered chicken and waffles. I decided to try the fried chicken and waffles for the first time. It was good and plentiful. Our waitress was very nice and checked on us constantly.

I always wanted to eat there. However, I live in New Jersey. Finally, last night, at the age of 72 years old, I crossed it off my bucket list!!! It was worth the trip to NYC. The food was outstanding, and the waiter and waitress were so professional. Thank you for a lovely evening, and the food was out of this world!!!
This is one of those places that you have to eat at because it’s a New York Institution. There are many tourists from all over the world 🌎 here. Several homeless people asking for handouts as well. Out door seating is available. Live music 🎶. Overall the food is good. The smothered pork chops were the star. The fried chicken was good, but not the best we’ve had. The staff was nice but the service was slow. Reasonably priced. Give it a try and you decide.
Had to come to this place after it was recommended to me by a friend. It did not disappoint! Had the chicken with mashed potato and grits and some corn bread. It was all very delicious! Other reviews say they waited a while to get their food but I got mine very quickly. More quickly than I wanted actually 😆. I'd be more than happy to wait for this food anyway. Don't go out to eat in a rush. I'm not from New York but I'll definitely come back to try something else when I'm in town. First time in Harlem too!
Sylvia's is a whole vibe! Came to NY to visit family and we stopped in Sylvia's. There was about a 30min wait but well worth it. We had a large party but the server handled everything with ease and was very attentive. Lets jump into this food... I ordered the fried chicken, greens (just like how my grandmother makes them) and yams.. whew!! Amazing, chef kisses!! I will be back on my next trip to NY!
We didn't make a reservation, so we had to sit on the patio, which was nice. Service was excellent from Amanda, but it took about 35 minutes to get our food. They did have a large group come in, so that may have been why. It was WELL worth the wait tho. Everything was delicious!!!! Next time we're in New York, we'll definitely go back.

This has been the best soul food I’ve had here in NYC. I had the oven baked half chicken it was wonderfully seasoned and juicy. It comes with 2 sides so I had Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. I’ve been searching for some good Mac and cheese and Can safely say these are in the top of my list. Customer services is very welcoming and friendly. They serve you corn bred when you are seated. There was live music and the atmosphere was great! This is a great place to come with family and/or friends.
I got pork ribs with mac n cheese and collard greens. Terrific meal, and terrific sauce - I think I tasted a hint of orange zest in the sassy barbecue sauce. My wife was indifferent with the fried chicken, but I think there's only so much you can do with fried chicken.
Sylvia's offered delicious food, atmosphere (we dined in the enclosed patio) and great service. It did take a while for our food to be brought to us but it was worth the wait! The cornbread muffins are the best I've ever had in my life. The Mac n cheese was perfectly cheesy. I can't say anything bad about what's on the menu. I will be visiting again the next time I'm in NY.
