as a teenager there was nothing better than an ice cold barqs and shrimp poboy. same now but replace barqs with a cold beer. really a dynasty when it comes to NO. tiny place that maybe seats 25. sit at the bar and get some local gossip. let the ladies make the poboy the way they make it. no reason to change a thing. watch the ditch when parking your car, you may not get out if you go in
This is the neighborhood friendly po-boy shop that you should visit even if you don't live in the neighborhood. A staple of home cooked food served by a family with deep roots in the community.
Located at 5240 Annunciation Street and serving up Po-Boys to locals as well as the occasional tourist since 1924, the only thing more unpretentious about Domilise’s signage is the interior, a true “local’s only” sort of space where orders are placed at the counter upon entry with seats available at Formica tables or Barside.
Consistently packed during peak hours, a steady trickle of traffic from open until close otherwise, Domilise’s Po-Boys and Bar has been family owned and operated since opening for just drinks in 1918, the Sandwiches having since made them famous as fresh fried Seafood and a variety of Meats are offered up between crusty halves of Leidenheimer Bread.
Visited just past 1pm on a Tuesday, a man referred to by the bartender as “Crazy Dave” loudly reciting Job as he slowly crunched through a sandwich of Debris and Zapp’s Chips, it was to one large half-and-half Peacemaker that I was treated mere minutes after seating, the ‘fully dressed’ option bringing Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Hot Sauce and Lettuce atop fried Shrimp and Oysters, some bites sweet while others were briny – every one of them slightly different but thoroughly delicious.
One of my many stops in New Orleans for famous eats. My dad had a catfish po boy and I had a fried shrimp po-boy. Restaurant was deplorable and filthy Beyond description. Catfish po boy was excellent and the shrimp po boy was decent but the shrimp or cooked too hard and we're of the small variety ala popcorn. Glad I went but I will probably hit the other places like Parkway or back to mothers
Worth the drive, the parking spot search and the line. The Poboys are amazing, and my second favorite only to Parkway. Friendly staff, not much seating, so go early. Fried oyster was delish. I hear people rave about the roast beef here, saying it's the best in town. It probably is, but I'm more of a fried PoBoy fan, so I stick with shrimp and oysters.
good po-boys, probably a little bit overrated. the half shrimp and half oyster is a must order. price is probaly on the expensive side. The fries are nice.
Po Boy heaven! Probably the best po boy I've ever had. I had the small shrimp and it was still huge. My husband had the hot sausage. The woman working the counter was so sweet. She let me and my husband sample between the 2 sausages (mild and hot), we chose the hot. You would probably miss it if you weren't paying attention. Would recommend this place to anyone.
Love love love love this place!!!!!!!! A must stop for me every time I visit this city! Great po boys! I love the atmosphere here. Shady and amazing!!!!
Best poboy in the city, state, possibly the world.. I usually get the shrimp or oyster and almost feel like the fry the food right before they put it on your sandwich. The bread they use is made in NOLA and couldn't be a better fit for a poboy.
If you're looking to experience a classic New Orleans neighborhood PoBoy joint, this is a good choice. Pretty much of a dive, but in a good sense. Just a classic, old-time, no-frills place. Order your sandwich at the bar/counter. About 6 tables or so in the place. Autographed pics from celebrity visitors on the walls. And the PoBoys are in my view good though not at the level of a place like Parkway. I like the shrimp PoBoy here - and the way it is dressed with a touch of hot sauce.
The soul food here is always great. No one does a Po Boy as good as Domilise's! The shrimp po boy was better than the catfish po boy but both were good. It was crowded inside, so they offered us folding tables and chairs outside. it was perfect!
Sky high expectations after all the foodie hero hype... Verdict: Pretty damn good! Fresh ingredients made with love. It's not a heavy Italian beef or cold cut hero. It's a fresh combination of ingredients prepared with true love and a light touch. Fries were a crispy fluffy surprise!
In A Nutshell:
-Domilise's Po-Boys & Bar is a neighborhood restaurant located in Uptown.
-I walked to this location from Marigny which is a little over 5 miles one-way.
-This is how dedicated of a foodie I am in search of good food, but one of the biggest reasons you put in the physical fitness is that you can eat whatever you want & as much as you want to a degree.
-With all that being said, the po-boy's here are 100% legit.
-They have a wide variety of choices, but when I walked in & asked what their best-seller was, the kind lady told me, the Shrimp Po-Boy hands-down.
-She was right, once I took a bite into that sandwich on the hot French roll, I was amazed at the taste of the shrimp.
-It's the perfect mid-day snack or even for a quick lunch.
Overall, the restaurant is small so if you are lucky you can sit down & enjoy every mouth-watering bite of their po-boy's!
Domilise's has been on our list for a few years now, and we finally made our way there. So glad we did! Had a half shrimp half oyster, and also had a roast beef. They all tasted excellent. I think the oyster was my favorite, then shrimp, then roast beef. You know you're I'm the right place when everyone that walked in was greeted by name. Will definitely go back.
Best po-boy in town. I’m not a huge po-boy person to begin with but this one was really good. Could use more sauce to help with a little dryness but that’s a personal thing. Service was super nice and helpful. Big portions my wife and I split the small which was huge! Nice little diner feel.
I'm drooling just looking at this sandwich! Domilise's is the real deal old school Po-Boy! Don't come here wanting to get served quickly. Take a breath and enjoy your time here. The food is worth the wait! I got the oyster Po-Boy and man was it perfect.
Great Po-Boys sandwiches. A little small dinning room. About 6 tables inside and 4 tables outside. The tables turn pretty quick. No one was waiting on a table with food in hand. We did not find the food salty at all which was great. It was PERFECT.!!
Old neighborhood place that looks the part. We had shrimp poboy. A little different here in that there is no tomato and the sauce is the key. Really good.
Oyster Po-Boy is the way to go (or if you have time for a nap the large size half shrimp/oyster). Don’t plan on this being a fast meal, they can get pretty backed up. The friendliness of the staff and the patrons more than make up for it. I managed to get the last sandwich of the day and they brought me over to show how they make it, hand breaded and fried to order, nothing sitting around. This one is worth the wait.
Not much room inside and it looks like is falling apart. But there's a reason this place had been around for over 100 years. The foods amazing. Great po-boys and the fries are amazing. I'm definitely coming back.
