Stumbled across this place while out running errands. A fan of Costa Rica and soon to be married there it was a great find. I had the shrimp ad rice, and it was flavorul, but in part because of a large amount if ham. We started out with the Latin Lover sampler and that was just delightful. There was more than enough food on that plate for two. Each treat reminded me of CR. Plenty of spice and pizzaz

A Hidden Gem.. My boyfriend and I wandered around wondering where to eat today, early Tuesday evening. I am a longtime NE girl, and was bored with having been everywhere, and did not want to drop $20 on one entree alone. Suddenly, we remembered The Front, having walked past it a few time. We decided to go in.

The first glimpse of the place is the pretty front patio - decorated heavily with geraniums. Stepping inside, you are met with a spacious area, where you can sit either in the open,. hidden in the booths around the corner, or upstairs on their lovely half-moon couch, which faces out a large window. The ambience is dark, with red lamps over-seeing the length of the bar, and a fantastic red-lamp chandelier. I am quite picky about my atmospheric vibe in restaurants. The Front has something for everyone - sit at a table, in a booth, be hidden away, upstairs and upscale, or outside on the patio. I was pleased. I was not pleased, however, to see the place completely empty. It does not look good for the restaurant, but we forged ahead anyways.

The menu is versatile. You can anything from a burger, to a ceviche. It's main flavor/theme is CostaRiacan food. We are unfamiliar with Costa Rican food. I admit - plantains are not something that immediately appeal to me. I am not your average Applebee's person - I am between a chicken sandwich girl and aspiring foodie. So we decided to try it out.

We ordered the stuffed plantain for appetizer. It is stuffed with feta cheese, and served with a cabbage salad and tomato, onion and cilantro. Let me tell you - it was FANTASTIC. We were surprised at how good it was. The sweet of the plantain, the salty of the feta, and the crunch and tart of the cabbage salad and it's accompanying sauce...lizano sauce, which we were told is a native Costa Rican sauce. Oh MY. Oh - did I mention the cilantro? It is front and center in the cabbage salad. I want to just order a bowl of that stuff next time I go there. YUM.

For our entree's, my boyfriend ordered the shrimp/rice dish. I do not remember the name, and it is not on the website menu - but it basically consists of-shrimp, yellow rice, stock (i think ham or chicken?) diced ham, tomato's, onion and that awesome cabbage salad again. For me, I decided on the Chicken Americano sandwich - with cheddar, bacon and herbed mayo.

The shrimp and rice: The rice was nicely spiced, with a hint of lemon? The shrimps are tail on, and not with that iodine taste you usually find on shrimp at many places. The cubed ham was appropriately salty, and the cabbage salad will forever be a winner in my book. Overall, I found it to be very tasty, and very well balanced.

My chicken sandwich was very good. The bread is grilled - and i think it was ciabatta? One thing I LOVED is that I could taste bits of the char in the inside of the bread mingling in with the chicken, reminding me of a good old grilled chicken. The breast of chicken inside was plump, juicy and flavorful - not thin, dry or tasteless at all. The bacon was almost prosciutto-like, which makes me wonder if it was not meant to be cooked to crispy, or was either very thinly sliced? The herb mayo - there was too much of it on there. It was dripping out. However, overall, the sandwich was excellent. I DID eat it all. My only complaint was it was a bit too salty and too much mayo. The french fries are standard - thin cut and potato-ey. Nothing special, good for what they are supposed to be.

To top it all off - the chef (Rolando) came out and talked with us. This ALWAYS impresses me. If you don't care about customer service - go to Nick and Eddie's!

I was sad to see the place empty. I hope they get a lot more business and don't have to leave NE Mpls one day. We need more little gems such as this, Gardens Of Salonica, Emily's Lebanese Deli, Pizza Nea e.t.c.

DEFINITELY go and try the food here! I am not easy to impress, but I promise you this place is off the hook food and atmosphere-wise.

Finally Costa Rican food in Minnesota. I went there just yesterday, I am sooo happy that I can finally go out and have Authentic Costa Rican food, I lived in Costa Rica for one year, I have been in Minnesota my whole life. I have not been able to find ANY Costa Rican restaurants in Minnesota. I am a kid with a new toy now. I had the gallo pinto (rice and bean dish) amazing, the flavors where spot on, I can definitely tell the Chef was raced in that beautiful place. I drive by The Front almost everyday for work, and I never knew that the food that they have was Costa Rican. Owner, Manager, Chef, If you guys read this PLEASE put a nice big sign that can tell people the cuisine that you guys serve in front of the building (COSTA RICAN CUISINE) I can guarantee that the place would be A LOT busier if people only knew that Authentic Costa Rican food is the beautiful gift being served. (oh and please bring Imperial beer) :-)
I found out in the radio, and when I heard that it was C.Rican food I came that same day. I love the patio, the flowes Oh my God, the music, nice salsa and Latin , I felt back in Costa Rica, mmm What a great feeling.
I recommend this place to everyone, service is great, Food * * * * * starts, I even got to meet the Chef that came outside to ask us how everything was. What a nice thing to do. I never get to meet who the Chef is. I felt special and I can tell he cares for quality .

Bravo to the Front Cafe, I am coming back tonight.

How Did I Miss This?. Holy Crap! I've lived near Northeast for 6 years and just heard about this place. My friend's and my dinner experience there was outstanding! Atmosphere A++++, Food AA++++, Service A++ (friendly, informal but attentive). Plus they have my favorite draft beer - Bell's 2 Hearted - yum! I can't wait until their patio opens up - and I heard there's dancing on weekends.

Awesome!!. The food is fantastice - the island pizza is great, and so it is the taco salad. My friend tried the Mango Chicken and thought it was wonderful. The atmosphere is so cool, very eclectic. This restuarant is 1000 x better than any chain restuarant.

Try it!. We've eaten here twice and had exceptional food and service both times. The Front Cafe burger has a spicy kick and the Latin Lover appetizer is amazing. There are some typical bar food menu items, but ordering anything that clearly contains the Costa Rican influence of the chef will probably be your best bet. He's very proud of his cooking and really personable. We're definitely going back and recommending this place to others.

Chef Rolando has came up with a spectacular menu that has something for everyone:-) I strongly recommend Dondo's chicken salad with exotic hearts of palm. Yum! Also if your a fan of french onion soup, it has a wonder flavor with a burst of rosemary! Kudos to the chef!!!

I'll be back.... Just dropped in for a quick bite with my wife...wasn't sure what to expect, but we like to try new places. Had the turkey pastrami sandwich with homemade aujus, and I have to say we were both pleasantly surprised. What started as a quick drop-in to satisfy our appetites turned into a great dining experience...we are definitely coming back. And, the prices are better than most....

The Front is a classic dance spot in NE. Has a certain vibe that’s not for everyone, but it’s a gem

Went here for their Halloween party. Although it was very busy the servers did their best to serve everyone in time. Also they require proof of vaccination which made our group feel very safe. We all had a great time and loved it.
