I came to Baker's Wife for the first time when I recently visited Minneapolis and fell in love with the place right away. Nobody can top their fresh cake donuts and the tea cake...simply wonderful!!
The Chocolate Ganache cake you made for me was the most delicious I’ve ever had! The ganache was the best I have ever tasted! Thanks so much!! DD

Located in the sleepy Powderhorn neighborhood of Minneapolis it was prior to opening on Saturday that the car was parked outside A Baker's Wife, an early arrival straight off the Red-Eye allowing one to witness owners Gary and Margaret Mossberg Tolle plus their team stack shelves and countertops before opening doors to a steady stream of traffic at 6:30am.
Serving locals a variety of baked goods for several decades, an adherence to time-tested techniques yielding some fifty items including loaves of Bread, Bars, Cookies and more seven days a week, it was after allowing a handful of regulars to place well-rehearsed orders that decisions were made, a grand total of just $13.30 yielding more than two pounds of Flour, Sugar and Butter that were taken to a table outside to eat.
Unsurprisingly finding most of the items still warm at such an early hour, two Donuts in particular generating a bit of steam in the damp September air, it was beginning with these that rumors of greatness unfortunately came up short as a result of each ring’s crumbly inside, the flavors otherwise pleasant but still not “great” in comparison to Donut-specific shops while the next taste of two Cookies was far better, the Oatmeal Raisin chewy and moist while a flattened “Russian Tea Ball” cracked crisp but melted on the tongue with a lengthy linger of Butter and Almond Flour.
Certainly not a spot for those counting carbohydrates or calories, though the same can be said of almost any Bakery worth visiting, it was from here that A Baker’s Wife stepped up big time, the Mankato Butter Bar falling somewhere between Chess Pie and Gooey Butter Cake while the Good Morning Bun and famous “American Tea Cake” each go all-in on lamination with the former shellacked in Cinnamon and Sugar while the latter hearkens of Kouign Amann, but with a more Biscuit-like Dough and larger pockets of air.

This food is AMAZING!!! I grow up in this neighborhood and never knew the best pastries where right near my home. No disappointments guaranteed. One try and you'll be hooked. Please open a place near or in Maple Grove. Until then I'll just make my way there one way or another.
The best donuts I have ever have! You cannot pass up the cinnamon sugar - especially in the morning when they are still warm! Browse the day old bread selection. At 50% off it's a great bargain. Everything still tastes so fresh and at that price the quality far surpasses supermarket selections!
Tea cakes and donuts. That's all you need. Well, and just about everything else there. Believe the hype but get there early to get the freshest things. Cash only, so be ready for that.
Finally went here and got the cinnamon sugar cake donuts of which everyone raves. They were very good but perhaps overhyped. Lots of selection and very, very affordable!! if I lived in the neighborhood I would go weekly. I won't drive across town, tho.
Great neighborhood bakery. My favorite is the simple plain cake donut. It gets better when they're still warm. It'd be nice if they could have some dark breads for sale as well, though. I'd love some fresh pumpernickle.
AMAZING Cherry Cheese Danish. The best danish I have ever had in my life! Consistently good, flaky and moist and not sugar laden. The cherries grab your pallet with their tartness exactly like they should. Staff always helpful and no matter how busy will take the time to answer your questions. There are not enough words to tell you how wonderful this bakery is.

Awesome. Named after the French farce film A Baker’s Wife is the little bakery that can. It is not fancy or pretentious, just a neighborhood bakery that offers up wonderful goods at great prices. When the old location closed due to raised rent it was deeply missed. The current location is larger and open longer hours. I drive 30 miles one-way in greedy anticipation of my next treat.
Specialties:
Cakes – they lie. The cakes feed a lot more people than they tell you as they are so tall the cake boxes don’t close. And they are rich and moist. I gave one to an attorney as a thank you gift and he looked at me strangely. Before I made it home he called and asked where I bought the excellent cake. They really are that good. Try the zebra (half chocolate / half white). Their wedding cakes are the same flavors and are excellent and inexpensive.
Donuts – they sell cake donuts individually or for a little over $6 / dozen. They are light and fluffy and taste great. My co-workers rave when I bring them in.
Lemon Bars – try. one. now! Great for company meetings when sliced in halves or thirds.
Buns – little pillows of goodness for your next holiday meal or sandwich.
Twinkie knock-offs – much better and addictive. Seriously!
I could go on and on. This is a bakery that doesn’t promote itself and was built on word of mouth.

Mmmmmmmmm. Some blessed soul just brought in two boxes of pastries to our office this morning. The attached business card says "A Baker's Wife's Pastry Shop". I sampled four pastries, everything was heavenly! Best pastries I've had since Bouchon in Napa Valley.
It's ok. My first trip I did not care for this place at all.
The offerings on the second trip were much better.
I'd say it is better than a Lund's bakery but not by a significant margin.
This is a must visit. I happened upon it today and picked up the recommended tea cakes, one of their specialties, wheat rolls, and some pastries. What a lovely bakery with friendly people! On street parking was easy to find on a Saturday.
Great place and fairly friendly staff. I say fairly because part of the staff was friend who were assisting. I tried to just be nice to the others and just kind of looked at me.
Other than that. Amazing sweets. Great selection. From cupcakes, cakes, to donuts!! It’s about a 15 - 20 min hike from airport but well worth the visit. Great coffee shop next door. Kill 2 birds one stone.
This cute little shop is near and dear to our hearts. They simply make the best creations and it’s so tucked away you would barely know it’s there. The Tea cake and fresh fruit tart are the highlights - seasonal danishes are also great - try the maple walnut!
Went here for a quick morning stop and I was in and out in 5 minutes. Basic selection of donuts, but they were great. Blueberry had great flavor- donuts are on the sweeter side.
I stopped in the shop after driving by it many times, it was lovely. We had cake donuts and a cigar cookie both were very good, but the powdered cake donut was 10/10. I then ordered a custom cake and myself and my guests absolutely loved it. Tasted great and everyone is always so nice inside!
I must say, a city bakery, tucked away, but easily found. Didn't try everything but had a oversized donut with filling...known as Boston Cream or Bismarck depending on where you are from. The thought of this oversized idea initially appealed to my glutenous early morning craving yet didn't live up to my expectation. The filling was loaded on one side and the other oversized side had no filling. So while everything tasted fine, the 1/2 cake donut which I expected cream was just a cake, the other side was a delight. You lost a star on that one. Otherwise I enjoyed the experience but would have preferred to pay cash but couldn't so atmosphere got less stars for that. Don't want to use my credit cards for donut purchases.... 😂
For years, I used to drive by this place in the morning on my way to work. Upon smelling the, oh so, delicious smells of bakery, I longed to go there. Well, fast forward about 3 years and I finally did. My only question is, why did I wait so long?! This place is what you have in mind when thinking bakery. They have it all, and AMAZING donuts. Well, I had a paczky (posh-kee) with strawberry cream filling. Oh boy! That "donut" was amazing. It tasted like a strawberry shortcake! I believe real strawberries were used, and not just some flavoring substitutes. It was light and gooey, and again, oh so good. Needless to say I'll be adding this spot to my list of places to visit while on the southside!
I got an Apple Cream Cheese Danish, Raised Glazed Donut, Mankato Butter Bar, Tea Cake, Cinnamon Roll and Maple Pecan Danish. Everything tasted just as good as they looked but the Butter Bar really surprised me the most. I also really liked the Cinnamon Roll too, they put cream cheese in it which is very different!
Oh my goodness, I was recommended to this bakery by a friend and oh boy they were not wrong! I was welcomed with a smile and a hello as soon as I walked through the door which is a terrific way to start a shopping experience of any kind. A vast selection in types of baked goods as well as varying flavors of each type. Prices are quite reasonable and most importantly everything I bought for my family was delectable. I highly suggest the chocolate cream paczki and pretty much any cupcake they make. This place is a bonafide gem!
I went to this bakery for the first time today. Got quite a few things to try.
The pink frosting donut is something that would pair so well with a cup of coffee. The donut is not sweet with a sweet frosting.
The white glazed frosting was delicious. We actually picked this one up for our dying senior cat as a treat. She agreed it was good. But,we also thought it was super good.
I have more items i got to try and I’m excited! I’m also real happy they had a school bus cookie. I drive school bus, and there’s hardly anything for us.
Also price was really fair.
