My gang wanted something sweet but not necessarily some cake so we decided to make a stop here. I have to say I was a little skeptical because of the tragedy that happened here however the customer service of this black owned business totally made up for that.
As soon as you stop into this business, it's almost as if you have stepped back into time. What I mean by that is the smell of baking butter hits you like a truck. That smell takes you back in time so when you were a kid and your mom was making a cake or something. That smell just brought back beautiful memories.
The lady at the counter is one of the owners I think it's a mom and pop establishment. She was so welcoming to us when we entered the store. She greeted us with love. This is rare! She genuinely seemed happy to see us as if she knew us. We automatically started ordering cookies, and more cookies, and more cookies. Not only did we order cookies we also ordered sweet potato pie. I am so upset with myself that I did not get more than one slice.
We wanted some peanut butter cookies as well but they didn't have any out in the display. Her husband was filling the display and we asked him did he have any in the back. He said yes I do. Eventually she asked us where we were from because she could tell we were not from Memphis. We told her we were from Atlanta. She advised that they were thinking about opening up a store here in Atlanta but in due time. We will definitely visit again if ever in Memphis.
They also sell the cookies online.
On the left hand side of the store there's a memorial for rapper Young Dolph who was tragically killed here at this location. I felt a wave of sadness as I view the pictures, the handwritten notes, and the flowers. God be with him.
Words can’t describe how good the butter cookies are and the strawberry is down right addictive! Southern charm at its best when it comes to the service. You’ll feel like family when you walk through these doors, I guarantee. If you are ever close to Makeda’s, do yourself a favor and stop in this locally owned business! You won’t be disappointed.
Went to actually pay my respect to young Dolph and try them cookies he so loved... They were delicious... Wish we had this business here in Kansas City

I'm glad I had a chance to stop by in my semi this morning.. I think I was the 1st customer of the day.
We were passing through on a road trip & only went here because of King Dolph, but the cookies were fresh & actually pretty good. The butter cookies were the best. I would stop by if I was ever in the area again

BEST COOKIES ON THIS SIDE OF THE MISSISSIPPI
As you enter the building you are hit with the wonderful smells of cinnamon, brown sugar and warm butter. These smells of baking caused me to immediately have a flashback of younger days when I waited for my Mawmaw (grandmother) cooking.
I was brought back to reality by a dark skin man with a white chef hat 👨🏿🍳 “ Hello Welcome to Makeda’s, we are so blessed to have you here” is what he said. His greeting and customer service made me feel important and as if I was his own family. He explained each flavor and allowed me to test new cookies I never tried before.
But baby let me tell you about the taste of these MAGICAL COOKIES 🍪. I brought 15 cookies total, every single one was cookie was cooked to PERFECTION . The flavor of the cookies they have are so delicious and unique.
I purposely order a flavor of cookie that I know I do not like (oatmeal and raisin) to see if they can make me like this flavor of cookie.
And they were successful with making me me love oatmeal and raisin cookies
I will be returning to this establishment every time I am in Memphis.
These are the BEST DAMN COOKIES EVER! My husband and I came up from Louisiana and decided to stop on behalf of Dolph. Best decision ever! I don't usually like butter cookies, but Good Lord, these are the truth. We purchased 14 cookies, all sorts. Every last cookie was DE-LI-CIOUS!!!!
We came from Dallas to visit Makeda’s and let me sayyyy WE NEED ONE IN DALLAS. The cookies were unbelievable fresh and by far the BEST COOKIES I HAVE EVER HAD. My favorite were the strawberry, iced oatmeal and of course the butter cookies and you know what? ALL OF THEM LOL. They have a little display for Dolph and I loved that. I believe the head baker was there and he was so so sweet. You could just feel his genuine kindness and love. If I could drive 9 hours every weekend for some cookies and southern hospitality, I most definitely would!!! Can’t wait to go back!
Love these cookies. We stop here every time we visit Memphis and grab the world famous butter cookies and chocolate chip cookies. The interior is clean and tidy and the cookies are amazing. I especially appreciate them being individually wrapped to lock in moisture and keep them fresh. They offer other desserts that I have yet to try but from reading the other reviews, I will give them a try on the next visit.
Whenever I come back home to Memphis I must get some makedas cookies many try but none can duplicate the flavor and her banana pudding and lemon pie oh my goodness you must try
