A new favorite place for our family. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. It's a real treasure find, as it's out of the way, but VERY worth the trip. My wife doesn't dish out compliments very often, but even she agreed that the hush puppies are the absolute best thing we've ever tasted. They were like Pringles... we couldn't stop eating them until they were gone!
Ok, so this is a split review. I have never had any of the BBQ that was any good. Cold, over cooked and mostly dry. So much for the BBQ. Now for the positive side..................Hush Puppies and Catfish! Both of them are top notch and the best in the Tennessee Valley.

Good restaurant and worth the drive. I have lived in Huntsville for the better part of my life and the Old Greenbrier has been on my list of favorites for years. I tried the New Greenbrier a couple of times and it just wasn't my cup of tea. The servers (at the new Greenbrier) are impatient and pretty much rude and the cashier has no personality at all. The food generally arrived okay, but nothing exceptional. The Old Greenbrier is pretty much 180 degrees the opposite of the "New" Greenbrier. The staff are welcoming, but not in your face, and the food is quite good for the area. If you are not accustomed to pulled pork it is a bit of a change from the sliced BBQ you might be accustomed to if you are from the middle of the state, but is quite good. I must admit that the "Old" Greenbrier was hit and miss there for a year or so, but they seem to be back and going again. The prices for BBQ have become quite high because of the fad of BBQ now, so the plates that once cost $6.50 are now $10.00 and the $1 tea is around $2, so with tip you are going to be paying around $15 for an adult. Sure the Old Greenbrier is an old building, but it is clean and orderly. If you want an idea of what family dining was in the '50s and '60s make the drive and give the Old Greenbrier a try. I drive by at least a half a dozen BBQ places on my way there and that in itself tells you something.
Worth the drive! Best hush puppies I've ever had. Great food, friendly service. The barbecue chicken was so good. I will definitely be going back.
This is the ONLY Greenbrier Restaurant you should ever eat at! Don't be confused by a place with a similar name...you want the OLD Greenbrier. I grew up eating here on Sundays after church and love coming back here when I am in town. The hush puppies are pretty darn good along with everything I've ever eaten over the past 30+ years. I enjoy the pull pork plate. They also have an "honor system" self-serve ice cream machine...$0.25 placed in the cup next to the machine. This is a great stop if you love good food.

Throw me one of those fantastic hushpuppies!. It is clean, their staff is always friendly, their iced tea is always cold and good.This is an old rest. that has really great food. Smoked pork, smoked chicken, and catfish fillets are my favorite. But they have other really good stuff like their ribs and even their chicken livers. You are served fries or backed potatoes along with vinegar slaw.
Now I left the best for last -- their HUSHPUPPIES! Their are served to you as soon as they get your drinks, they bring you a basket and they keep on bringing them until you tell them to stop. And you don't want them to stop is the problem! lol. They are so good and tender and not too much onion. Also dont forget the white BBQ sauce for the chicken. yum.
****Now for two negatives about the place. 1.) they only have vinegar coleslaw and I do not care for this. Give me a simple mayo, cabbage, carrot coleslaw and Im a happy gal. :) So I really feel they should add this too the menu because I have heard others inquire about it also, so it is just not me that feels this way.
2.) their salads. the salads are sad, sad, BAD! You order a salad (because you dont like vinegar slaw) and you get a wedge of lettuce slightly torn apart that has usually nothing else but sometimes their is a bit of tomato and some dressing. And it is usually wilty and brownish. That is not a salad! that is a saucer of lettuce with dressing. come on would two slices of cucumber, a wedge of tomatoe, a couple rings of onion and a sprinkle of carrot strings hurt!!! now that would make any salad eater happy.
Good food. Great southern service. Limited menu but it is all good. Not a swanky place but definitely a local and comfortable feel.
Catfish. Delicious catfish! Moist and not over fried.
I enjoy the catfish and hush puppies more than anything here.
Go out there!. When I first came to Huntsville about 4 years ago, people would tell me that my husband and I should go out there. We heard good things about how good the bar-b-q and catfish are. We finally went out there and now we tell people to go out there because the food is very good!
