GOOGLE AND GO!. This place is a little hidden so know where you are going but the food, service and prices are great. Unfortunately, no beer or wine etc. An especially good place for lunch.
Taco Tuesday has made my life complete. Melly Mel is such a fabulous cook and always such a sweetheart. The staff is always friendly and treat you like family. I dream about their collard greens n mac n cheese. Sometimes they run out of items, but only because it's THAT GOOD!
Cant view your menu would like to see what you have on your menu so i can order from it
Amazing food & friendly Mell. My girlfriend and I had an odd craving for fried chicken (blame Breaking Bad) but didn't want the oft badly made stuff KFC serves. We decided to try Melly's because UrbanSpoon users had rated it highly. The place is awful to find. Yes, the address is technically 313 West Beltline Highway and the road is actually labeled as East Badger Road. And yes, it really is in the big warehouse. Just drive around the left side and you'll see the sign.
Don't let the homey, simple style of the place fool you. The food is amazing. We shared a 3-piece dark-meat chicken platter and the fried catfish, along with 4 sides: cabbage, yams, macaroni & cheese, and potato salad. The sides were admittedly impressive, but the stars really were the chicken and catfish. Both were perfectly done, in terms of the meat. Just past the point of underdone and nowhere near overdone. Very tender, both. The crusts are crisp but thin enough to not hold much oil. Neither seemed greasy at all. I am sensitive to the bitterness of overused fryer oil and found there was not a trace of bitterness. I daresay these were the best fried chicken and catfish I've had in many years.
We also had slices of fresh-from-the-oven lemon cakes with in-house frosting. The cake was warm and fluffy and the frosting had a silky texture somewhere between light whipped cream and heavy buttercream frostings. The only thing that might have made the cake better is poppy seeds, but not everyone likes them. I can't complain, though; it was excellent.
It was nice chatting with Mell, the owner. She has some great stories and apparently broad tastes in food. The conversations -- between runs to the kitchen -- made for an even nicer dining experience.
I am going back.
The real deal. I have to say, I wasn't sure what to think once I walked into the door and down the stairs into the basement of a nondescript brick building, past the kitchen to a small seating area. This isn't your typical Madison restaurant.
They were out of their famous Mac and Cheese, catfish nuggets, and cabbage at the time I visited on Friday around 12:45pm. The staff was friendly and helpful and the food was pretty good. I tried the catfish filet, which was slightly overcooked, but well seasoned and nicely crusted with cornmeal. It came with 2 sides. The green beans were cooked with ham, so they had some flavor, and the coleslaw was alright.
I expected more for my money here, but it was definitely home cooking and tasted good.
Chicken, macaroni and cheese. Really good chicken. Really creamy mac & cheese.
A hard place to find, but well worth the trek. This is my favorite eatery in all of Madison-dom. The owner makes her own freaking caramel for her incredible caramel cake. My husband says "It tastes like Christmas." Carmelle and her family are incredibly friendly and always happy to see new people. Incredible food for the price. We always over tip a lot because we feel so badly that we pay so little for such an amazing meal. The southern style food is perfect. I haven't tried the lasagna yet, but Mama knows how to cook so I know it'll be good! "Where your Mama at!?"
I don't say this lightly: I just had the best fried chicken, ever. Followed closely by great rib tips, amazing baked beans (with chunks of ground beef), lustrous potato salad, and other [insert positive adjective] sides (FYI, two sides and a drink are included with most menu options).
Melly Mell's is hard to find (Google Navigation got us close enough). Once you arrive you'll notice the entrance is suspect. Go inside. You are here for the food, not a pretty door and facade.
Also, if you are looking for a good deal this place is easy on the pocketbook.
Best chicken and waffles I've ever had. And this is saying a lot, as I used to frequent the famous Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles in Los Angeles.
I freaked out when I saw Melly Mel's was permanently closed, but then I read on FB that they will be opening in a new location soon. Thank god. This place is great. The location was out of the way, but worth it.

They have great fried chicken...nice and crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside.
Seriously delicious. Go try it. You won't be disappointed. Also, they cater, and they will HOOK IT UP.
