The place reminded me of a English Pub, it was a most enjoyable place to have a early dinner. The waitstaff where so friendly, and very attentive to your needs. The food was great, and menu provided a mixture of wide varieties of items to choose from. Highly recommend The Village Idiot to anyone who likes the going to a nice restaurant, and very unique dishes to eat.

Village Idiot Melrose is a place that, as the name suggests, doesn’t take itself too seriously. What it does take seriously though are the food and drinks that it serves. It’s a large gastropub with a decidedly British angle but don’t come here expecting some sort of stereotypical idea of what Americans think a British pub is.

Hearty Pub Grub. My friend J and I met here after work - she'd been raving about the steak and potato pie, so despite the no-reservations policy we decided to try our luck. Though the place was busy, we didn't have any trouble getting a table in the crowded, pubby, dimly-lit space (so dim, in fact, that in our dark corner it was hard to read the menus). The steak and potato, which we both got, was delicious - hearty and warming, washed down with a $6 Speckled Hen pint. You can also opt for a half-pint, for the lightweights among us (J included). After dinner, we split the s'mores dessert, a gourmet take on a s'more with graham crackers crumbs, hot fudge, and a toasted, glistening marshmallow. I'm already planning to bring my Boy back for another visit. Maybe brunch?

I've been going to VI for over two years and hang there about twice a month. Friendly, good food, consistently busy. Great neighborhood hangout. Reasonable prices. Mostly 25 to 35 crowd. My favorite is the mussels; have it everytime. See Bert and Deacon at the bar.

The Village Idiot - A Brunch Review. I have been to the Village Idiot on a scant few occasions. These visits have only been during random times, however, always in the evenings. I have seen it packed out with people and I have seen it moderately empty. I have had a few glasses of assorted wines and I have had a couple of appetizers from the evening menu. It is a lovely space that boasts lofted wood beam ceilings, chalkboard menus, brick walls, skylights and large street-facing windows. It's located along the touristy Melrose stretch of boutiques, tattoo parlors, fetish shops and cafes. While this is not exactly my nook of the city, The Village Idiot has been a convenient meeting place, a convenient watering hole, in a convenient location.

This past Sunday I met a friend there for brunch. Normally I would poo-poo the idea as I'm not extremely familiar with Idiot's (as the cool kids refer to it) food but what I do know is no great shakes. HOWEVER, I am always willing to try a new brunch spot and I heard it would be practically empty (a plus for me on a Sunday morning). Meaning, I could camp out and spread out at either the bar or a table, do my crossword, have a few bloody mary's, and eat whenever it suited me.

The rumor was true; there were only about 6 other people in the place when I arrived. So, I sidled up to the bar, slapped the paper down and ordered my bloody and a coffee. The bloody appeared in a pint glass, which is always a plus. But what's this? It was also really good! It was spicy and thick and strong. The coffee was from Intelligentsia and quite exceptional, as is widely known. So far, so good.

I might add that at this point, that I like to sip my beverages (of which I have three, now, counting my water), and toil with the crossword while I work up to the food. I appreciated the bartender (as I sat at the bar) giving me my space and distance, never hounding me to order. And he was an incredibly affable chap.

The brunch menu is really going for the Brit style. Traditional English breakfast: bangers, mash, beans, toast, rashers, etc. It is actually a pretty extensive menu beyond that as well. Everything from homemade breakfast bread to cherry-cashew granola… from whiskey cured ocean trout with toasted brioche, crème fraiche and pickled beets to fried duck eggs, chorizo, tomato, chiles & yellow corn grits… from tomato ricotta tart with poached eggs and herb salad to lemon ricotta pancakes with sliced bananas and honeycomb butter. The Idiot's (see, I'm cool, now) brunch menu also has, among other items, a selection of English pies; sandwiches, including "Breaux & Sheftell" filet-o-fish, butter lettuce, house tartar sauce & slaw; a pub burger; salads; stuffed bacon wrapped dates with a roasted pepper tomato sauce and steamed mussels.

I ordered the Fried Duck Egg over Polenta and Grilled Vegetables. It was quite good. I am not a huge bell pepper fan and found there to be a few too many of them scattered about in the polenta. But at least they were the red and yellows, not the greens. The dish had a nice, rich flavor, the polenta's texture was spot on, and the egg was a resplendent specimen. I also ordered a side of bacon, which was delicious, thick, peppery and smoky.

My friend had the full English breakfast which included eggs (he had his scrambled) & beans on toast (again a nice thick slice of homemade bread), rasher & banger, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms. The rasher was not your ordinary 'rasher' of plain smoked bacon, but a 'bacon' made of thinly sliced pork loin.

The pace at the Idiot started to pick up as the day wore on but it was never even remotely crowded or loud. I felt it was a bit dark and, obviously, smelled like a bar. I appreciate the British pub effect in the menu, but again, it's not entirely my style. On occasion, perhaps. But even while I was in England, it was never exactly the food that thrilled me. Yorkshire pudding downright scared the b'jeezus out of me (although I think I'd really fancy it these days). I'm telling you that I definitely won't be a regular - at any time of day - at the Village Idiot. But I know a lot of other people are and the good folks that run the place are doing a damn fine job. I'll just say that although it's not in my circulation, I'm glad it's in the world.

Drinks and Mussels. Let's be honest. The place is packed and loud. But I'll go any day of the week for drink with friends. The bartenders are great and the crowd is the lingering type -- despite the busy factor something makes you feel like you could stay all night. And I often do. I'm all for pub food, but this place isn't on my top eats list in town. That said if you're going for a beer -- they have great local microbrews -- get the mussels. You won't regret it.

Ahh, a place to call New York.... It's nice to be able to step in to the Meat Packing District and not even leave LA.

This place has it all. A great look and feel, and terrific American food.

A go-to place for lunch and for meeting a bunch of friends after work.

Delicious food. If you don't like brussel sprouts, go here. I know, that sounds weird, but really...this place will change your mind!

Great options in a really fun atmosphere...definitely worth the wait (yes, there will be one).

Funny that after coming here a few times late at night for little get-togethers, I had discounted this place as just another hipster hang out w/ people packed in like sardines…I didn’t even realize they were open during the day, let alone housing some serious culinary fare! Eating here during normal meal times is in stark contrast to what I had experienced late night; for brunch it was open and airy w/ little breezes coming through the giant raised windows that faced Melrose ave…you still get the hip crowd but it’s so much more relaxing and civilized.

I'm finally starting to warm up to my new neighborhood in West Hollywood, I think. There are so many great new food options to explore right within walking distance, including the Village Idiot , a self-proclaimed "gastro pub" on Melrose.

Relaxed restaurant and bar on Melrose. Came here post-day drinking at All Seasons Brewery for some food. We walked in without a reservation and for 6 people, we were still able to get a table within 5 minutes. We ordered food to split among the group, including 2 orders of Brussel sprouts, poutine, fries, the burger, mussels, and bread pudding. Portions were on the smaller side, but it’s fine. The Brussel sprouts were quite crispy and I liked the poutine, though the chicken gravy was a tad watery. The waiters were all really nice, and when more people from our larger group came, they helpfully put together more tables together so we can sit together. Credit cards accepted. Restrooms are available in the back left. Indoor dining only (no outdoor seating). Street parking. Overall, a laidback meal with food good to share family-style.

Oops! Stumbled into the wrong place. ...We tried it (instead of an hour+ wait for another breakfast/ brunch place). Awesome find: THE VILLAGE IDIOT has great food and service, great music, shady indoor and outdoor seating. Everyone loves these 2 breakfast/ brunch options: Idiot's Hash or the Lemon Pancakes with fresh fruit on top. Of course, since it is an authentic-feeling English pub, you will find all the classic English pub foods and drink. For this part of L.A., there was more street parking (residential around the corner) and seating than most of the restaurants and bars in the area. Worth the trip.

Came here for brunch, loved the atmosphere and loved the menu, so many good options. Seating seemed plentiful and our waiter was very helpful in helping us decide what to choose. I recommend the buttermilk ricotta pancakes w/ bananas, they great!

As a Brit visiting LA for the first time, sitting outside in the rain with a good pint and a plate of fish and chips was quite ironic but made me feel right at home! Great place to sit and take in the magic that is Melrose. Special thanks for our server for going above and beyond (and letting us know about the happy hour)!

Love this chill place. Great food, great drinks. Nice chill crowd. What I like most is the dog friendly outdoor setting. And if you are dining aline and your pooch can't be left alone or you worry someone will snatch them....take em to the bathroom. The potato beef pie is amazing. My favorite ite.

We went to this place on happy hour at 4pm to 6pm. Oysters at 2$ are amazing and their wine at 20$ the bottle is great for the qualite of the wine.

The Village Idiot was a wonderful close to our day, with a wonderful dinner with very courteous service. We didn't initially intend to come here, but came since it's one of the nice places on Melrose open late at night. We came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, and were very pleased! We started off with the cheese platter, which was simple but came with a very good variety and selection of cheeses, all of which I enjoyed. We then got the salmon entree and a few sides, all of which were delicious. The salmon was just right! Very pleased with all of the food here. I also loved the atmosphere and vibe of the place. Different from almost anything else in LA! Had a bit of a pub feel, but at the same time had a very contemporary vibe to it. A dark ambience inside with dim lighting and dark wood everywhere. I really liked it for dinner! The service was also excellent, the waitress was very sweet and always available. Hit all the check marks for me! Great food, inviting atmosphere, unique vibe, and great service! I'll definitely come back!

Genuinely very good food. I come here for the food more so than the drinks. But the drinks are also lovely. Favorite place on Melrose.
