While in LA, my hometown, you should try Palermo on Vermont near Sunset Blvd. Tony, the owner, is an old friend and I was one of his ORIGINAL customers when they were in the original shoebox a few blocks over on Hillhurst.
The place is a Hollywood landmark with photos of stars all over the walls, including CombatCritic! There's a small photo of me in Palermo, Tony's hometown, near the front door and an 8x10 of me in uniform high on the right wall as you go back to the men's loo. At least they used to be there! Make sure you tell Tony that LtCol Chris Sorrentino said "HI" if you go! You'll get the royal treatment.
The food is excellent, home style Sicilian, not "gourmet", with thick red sauce, massive portions, and reasonable prices. The veal parmigiana is my favorite and their pizza is TO DIE FOR. Free wine while you wait, which is commonplace between 5:30 and 8pm, and the cannoli are wonderful, possibly ON THE HOUSE if Tony is there and you tell him you know me. Tell him I'll try to get out there soon and BUON ANNO ... a presto amico!

Ate there last night wow, amazing food for the price, 2 slices cheese pizza, really good lasagna enough for 2, salad, and great garlic bread!!! --- $20 bucks take out!! Can't wait to go back and try something else!
Friends first brought me to Palermo and I have returned often. The food is great and the service, friendly. One of my favorites.
My hotel sent me here. The cheesy interior does not give you any idea how good the food will be that they will they serve here. I grew up on stuff like this this. I felt right at home. Will love to come back.
This Italian restaurant is very good. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana with lentil soup and spaghetti. Delicious! Very nice and calm environment. Service is pretty good. They have a large variety of wine options to choose from. I will definitely be willing to coming back!
The only time I come here is when my family brings me. And I'm glad they do. Pizza, pastas, and sandwiches are good. I like their veal and chicken plates. Also, I always save room for cannoli and spumoni.
A Los Feliz staple, always enjoy going here for a real laid back, non-Hollywood experience. Complementary wine and pizza appetizers make waiting for your table half the fun. Great food, big pizzas, awesome spot for a big group and always enjoy the friendly staff.
I have to refute all the bad reviews. This reminds me of a good NYC pizza. Large pies for a great price I just feel bad I never went there before.
Seafood Italian is difficult and this places pulls it off ! The salmon dish had amazing flavors and lots of vegetables. The clam linguini was also excellent.
The service was great.
We got the Cheese Ravioli and Fettuccine Alfredo.
With the Cheese Ravioli we had the tomato, garlic and basil sacuse, it was really good.
We got chicken with the Fettuccine Alfredo, we weren't a big fan of that dish.
We also had the fried Mac and Cheese, it wasn't bad.
We would eat here again.
I can't say enough about the food and especially the service we received. This place is AWESOME!!! If you ever get a chance to eat here...take it. Best real Italian food I have ever eaten. All made from scratch, and you can tell. AUTHENTIC!!!
This was a dining experience. Everybody treated you like family. Actually nicer than family! The food was fantastic. Definitely the best lasagna I've ever had in my life. The rest of the family had pizza and fettuccine alfredo with chicken. All delicious.
The food was really great and the staff was very friendly. They have good prices and the hospitality makes you feel very welcome. And I believe they have high chairs.
Very good food. The pizza is amazing and the wine is such a great price. The atmosphere and the decorations are so homey. There is a bit of a famous history here with celebrities so it’s cool to see all the pictures they have up of who visited. The singer is a really nice touch too!
Excellent Italian food with plenty of flavor. This place is a Hollywood tradition. Do not miss dessert especially if it's the tiramisu. Also Griffith Park and the Observatory are right nearby.
This place is simply amazing. From the food to the staff...oh and do not forget all the celebrity pictures hanging everywhere. It's a pretty cool place. Their pizza, fried calamari and their wings are to die for. I love the wing sauce they use, I have a strong suspicion that it's Red Hot (might be completely wrong.). Keep it up guys and to the people working in the kitchen. YOU GUYS ARE KILLING IT, WHATEVER YOU GUYS ARE DOING BACK THERE KEEP IT GOING. YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!
This is the best Italian food I have ever had, the pizza is just amazing. This place seems so authentic, the staff and the service is just commendable.
The owner is probably the nicest and most humble person you can imagine. No doubt the fame of this restaurant. This is a must visit restaurant especially for Italian cuisine lovers.
We haven't been to Palermo Italian Restaurant in Los Feliz for decades - and it is just as friendly and hospitable as ever!
The food is straightforward home Italian cooking, as it always had been.
The service starts with a phone call to the restaurant as dinner service started to ask about parking. He stayed on the phone with me until I found the street a few minutes later. I was so impressed.
And I could tell our long- time, accommodating server that I never lose an opportunity to tell people how Palermo made my husband and I (and everyone in the lively crowd on line waiting outside) feel so welcome with a glass of wine 🍷 servers passed to us all. They still do this for $1 I understand.
And, sigh, when you walk outside, there are people in walking in the streets, which what I miss so much about living in the area!
