Aloha! I gotta say, my wife and I have been Roy's lovers since 2005. First Roy's experience was at the Ko Alina Resort on Oahu when we were Haloes enjoying the food and culture while stationed there for three years. When we got back to mainland, we found Roys La Jolla and we were stoked. We've been to the Roy's in Waikiki, awesome!!, and Newport Beach, total let down. We've yet to try SD bay front Roy's but hear it's awesome. Our anniversary dinner last night at La Jolla Roy's was amazing. Seared AHI is still my favorite. Maui Wowie salad is refreshing, so good! The Sunrise at Haleakala roll you must try, awesome flavor! Topped it off with the best cup of coffee I ever had and was treated to a chocolate soufflé for our anniversary. Thanks Roy's La Jolla for another great delicious dinner and experience!!!
My husband and I have been coming to Roy's since 2004 with our girl's and parents for dinner or to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and have never been disappointed with the service or meals. It's is always great to know that if we ever want great service or to enjoy a spectacular dinner, we just need to come here. Thank you tonite for another special meal and Charles our server who took extra care of us!
Good food, excellent service. We had only seafood dishes and they were all uniformly good. The lava cake dessert was yummy. The service was friendly and professional, although they seemed to leave you alone for just a tad bit longer than expected. The only odd thing was the lack of many other diners. The restaurant had a lacklustre air, although the staff seemed to operate as if all was well. My previous visit was a while ago, but I recall it as a very busy and vibrant place. Let's hope this is not part of a downward spiral.
I had the Crispy Karaage Calamari, Canoe for Two, Caesar Salad, Misoyaki Butterfish, and Kaffir Lemon Tart.
The Karaage Calamari was new, tasted good but really crispy.
Caesar was good; the Butterfish was excellent as always.
I liked the lime tart as well but not as good as last time (but I've had a lot of lime recently).
Still a great place to eat, service is good, atmosphere is excellent and the place is always busy!
I can say that I do enjoy dining here because there's a touch of Hawaii feel that makes me feel like I'm home.
Service is always good. No doubt about that. Very attentive but there's times where I would have to ask for our water to be filled.
Food:
Filet Mignon
Misoyaki Butterfish (very well known for this dish)
Bacon wrapped Pork Chop
Karage Calamari
Grilled Salmon
Edamame (ask for it -Free)
The calamari is always a hit or miss. Sometimes it can also taste salty. The filet is always tender and the butterfish is always good.
The pork chop was tender and seasoned well. I've had other dishes in the past so read and see my review on Yelp.
The negative for me is the rice. A few times I've dined here the rice is not cooked good. Not enough water that it's hard. Coming from Hawaii and of course I'm Asian, my thoughts are you can't mess up rice. Oh well.
Lastly, the cocktails, especially 1988 and Happy Hour aka Aloha Hour is reasonably priced and good menu selection.
Definitely will return and highly recommended.
I had to have my misoyaki butterfish. The La Jolla location is almost identical to the Hawaii locations (Hawaii is still best) in taste, quality and enjoyment. The food and drinks brings me back there. Appetizers, entrees and desserts are very good to excellent and great variety/selection. Worth the trip and their happy hour (named Aloha Hour) goes to 7pm!
Enjoyed my dinner over there. Nice menu, service and quality of food. I tried sushi roll as appetizers and it was really good. Wine selection is decent. Ordered nights special Chilean Seabass and that was yummy. Good location and have many other good restaurants and shopping on walking distance. They also have private dining room for business dinners.
Really nice restaurant and many tasty food items. we ordered appetizers the entire time and were more than satisfied,
Good happy/aloha hour menu, great cocktails and fantastic food! Goes till 7pm in the bar, and starts back up at 9p!
Very good service, beautiful restaurant. We had the special prix fixe meal that included an appetizer, main course and dessert. All were quite good. We had lobster potstickers that were marvelous. The braised beef ribs were perfect-tender and flavorable. The butter fish was ok. The sides were very complimentary. The lava cake was spectacular!
Fun to see this Hawaiian restaurant in La Jolla. Menu is similar with a focus on fresh/seasonal food and island seafood. Upscale decor, good wine list.
Julio is a really good Sous Chef. He did a fantastic job of prep for our group. Roy's offers the best in Hawaiian fusion food. You will not be sorry you tried it.
