We had The Candied Yam cater for our office at Crowe Horwath. During tax season we are always looking for exciting vendors to feed our crew, and these people hit the mark! The staff was very friendly and the food got over the moon raves! One employee remarked, "This was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long long time. The fried chicken was to die for and the sweet potato corn muffin has no comparison. Mac & cheese and candied yams were sublime. With beans and greens like theirs, I could become a vegetarian." Thank you so much! We WILL be calling you again to try more of your delicious food!
I have been gone from Virginia for 20 years and always hoped for a place with good southern/soul food. The food is incredibly good, portions are large, the young man working the counter was very friendly and the restaurant is very clean. Would highly recommend.
The Candied Yam delightful southern cuisine is my new go to place for delicious home cooked southern food in Grand Rapids.
Located on the south west side of town in a strip mall, it is a bit hard to find, but worth the effort!
We tried multiple of the meats and sides, and we’re not disappointed in any of them. I personally really enjoyed the ribs.
I'm here to testify if you are ever in Grand Rapids and wish for a great home cooked meal, like Grandma use to make 😋. Stop into Candied Yams. The food was excellent the price was even better. I can't get enough. I'm not one to rant and rave about much but I swear on everything you love. You will be more than happy. satisfied and full. Bring a friend, invite the family. I really enjoyed the perch, green beans(overcooked)and candied yams I ordered. I'm no longer able to eat greens or black eyed peas, but I had a little taste and they were delicious. The peach cobbler was good, too. Cornbread was great, but cold. It would have been 5 stars if warm. I usually don't eat soul food in restaurants because I cook it at home, but I was traveling and wanted to support a small business and it was worth the stop. A recommendation is for them to tone down salt and sugar a little in recipes for healthier food.
Just a favorite place. Staff is personable, food is great. Really satisfies the cravings for someone like me who is from out of town. It has a “home away from home feel” - also plenty of veggie options if there are any non meat eaters in your party. The always have events featured on their screens and there’s a sweet potato French toast bake on Saturdays and Sundays before 10:30.
Absolutely delish! We split the 2 meat and 2 sides entree for $13.99. I got meatloaf and mac & cheese and my hubs got the smothered pork chop with cabbage. The Mac&Cheese was so good! The pork chop was a bit grissly/fatty, but it has amazing flavor from the light breading and gravy. The meatloaf was very good as well. I’m not a fan of cornbread that’s sweet -but no biggie, I ate it as dessert! I can’t wait to return and try more items!
Was a recommendation from a friend, the food was incredible. I took it to go and destroyed it in my car because I couldn't help myself. The chicken was the perfect amount of crispy and juicy, the mashed potatoes were some of the best I ever had, lastly the yams were incredible.
Wow! Catfish and perch are amazing! The food alone is a 5 but what puts it over the top is the service. The ladies there are sooo nice! Keith Lee needs to visit GR and this place!
I just got food from the Candied Yam for the first time. I got fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy. The chicken was delicious, not too heavily breaded and the seasoning was very good. I will definitely be back to try the perch next time! I also feel like the price is very fair for the amount of food included. I was too full to try the cornbread but will heat it up tomorrow.
I visited The Candied Yam for the first time recently. Very impressed with the food and service! I loved the fried chicken and Mac and Cheese!
Was in the area and googled this spot. Absolutely no regrets. Everything tasted good and was more reasonably proced than other soul food restaurants in the area. Will definitely be back again when I am in town.
