What Sushi Yama lacks in decor it makes up for in the highest quality sushi. The Chef is a master in his art. Tucked in the basement of the McKay tower, you will find the finest sushi in Grand Rapids. I have been coming to Sushi Yama for around 6 years, I have sampled most of the menu, and I have never been disappointed.
Pretty good sushi joint. It's got a slightly weird layout with fridges in the dining room/ordering area, but no biggie. Service was good and quick with an elderly Japanese guy taking and making orders and another fellow bringing out orders. The Baby Octopus Salad was pretty good, if a little boring with just octopus, lettuce, and a sesame ginger dressing. It was nice that the octopus was cooked properly, though. The Las Vegas Roll was enjoyable, but was perhaps a bit small for the price, but not outlandishly so.
GREAT sushi, I was skeptical at first!. So we normally go to another sushi place downtown, that's really nice! Sit down, candle on the table, well taken care of. We were headed there for a date night, but realized on a tight time schedule we wouldn't be able to wait for a table there, thus deciding to give this place a try. All we saw was the sign outside on Monroe center, I had no idea you went into a stairwell, down stairs, into this unexpected lobby/food court area. I was skeptical to say the least....I even remember telling my husband...maybe we were dumb to eat here. I WAS SO WRONG! Their sushi is so good, we LOVE the shrimp tempura roll, soooo good! Aso the mango roll! They are the only place to do a mango roll right, yum yum yum!! Although the spicy tuna is not my favorite, the price is wonderful!! Since thwt night, my husband and I have basically ordered from there once a week for a month now. Highly recommend, especially for take out to bring home. Our favorite!
Glad I found this place! Kind of a hidden spot... Basement level. Rolls were great. My new downtown lunch place. :-)
Absolutely the best sushi place in town. It's like a secret little getaway you won't regret taking. Fantastic fresh sushi, and great service for a price you can't beat. I would highly recommend sushi Yama over any of the other sushi places in the area. Best quality. Best price.
This is my go to sushi place in Grand Rapids! It is not fancy but the sushi is good and the prices great. The location is a little odd being in the basement of McKay Tower but I find that part of the charm now!
First, the sushi-good sushi. Nothing extra special, but solid and reliable.
Second, the atmosphere. If you've spent any time in Japan or surrounding countries, you'll feel comfortable. If I were blindfolded and flown by plane to Sushi Yama, you could have convinced me I was in Japan. I loved the experience (but I enjoy Asian culture) and the sushi was good.
Favorite Sushi of Grand Rapids. Excellent sushi place! The owner is so nice and the food is great. The price is great, and the texture and overall taste of the creations are better than other higher priced sushi places in Grand Rapids. Their vegetarian rolls are also easily the best in Grand Rapids.
Best sushi ever!. I love Sushi Yama. I have not been able to find a more affordable, delicious, or authentic sushi in the Grand Rapids area. Their ingredients are fresh, flavorful, innovative, and of course, so, so, yummy. When I'm craving a great roll, this is where I go. I'm addicted!
Good spot for a quick lunch. I've eaten at Sushi Yama about a half dozen times and really enjoy it. My favorite is the spicy tuna and the house salad. There is a small area to sit and eat your lunch or take it to go.
Blown away by the quality of the sushi here. Sushi Yama has incredibly fresh sushi for a place in Michigan. Their selection is plentiful with many options, including vegetarian. It’s right on Rosa Parks Circle and Kilwin’s is just above it. If you’re looking for a place to find great Japanese cuisine, Sushi Yama is the place you should go
Excellent experience. Ordered the seaweed salad, miso soup, spider, crispy eel, Michigan, orange and dragon rolls. All the food was delicious. Many dishes had a nice flavor of toasted sesame. The server was very nice and even gave us a complimentary candy with our dinner! Don't be off-put by the fact that it is tucked away in the basement, it is a great restaurant.
Great sushi at a great price, can't beat it. Glad I found this place as I'm not from the area. Highly recommend , Would go again. Very nice chef who takes order, prepares and takes your order to you. Gave us free nigiri rolls, And candy . In the basement of the old bank just follow the signs. Super tasty. Kind of hidden gem you always hope to find in an unfamiliar city!
If you like sushi don't pass up Sushi Yama, great little hidden gem (literally hidden 🙂) in the basement of the McKay Tower. Quiet, inviting and friendy little place to have a good meal or snack!
Such a wonderful hidden gem in the midst of busy downtown Grand Rapids. I went here for lunch today, and was in and out in 30 min. I had a delicious meal at a fair price in a relaxing atmosphere. Thanks so much!
It was delicious! Can't really go wrong, spicy tuna was amazing!
This place is a hidden gem! Found it about two years ago and it’s still my favorite. The sushi is top notch, prices are reasonable, setting is clean and quiet, and service is excellent. Highly recommend!
AMAZING. Hands down the BEST sushi place I have ever found. In the low level floor of an office building such a random place but it is the BEST miso soup I’ve ever had. Well done. Service was great and every sushi roll is made with love. This HAS to be a definite stop if you’re a sushi connoisseur. No other place in the area has it like this. Beautiful decor inside the shop. Wonderful selection on the menu. Me and my bf came here for our parting lunch before we drove back to saginaw, and the sushi master chef even gave us a little candy as a thank you gift. Tip them well they deserve it all ❤️
This was my first time going here and I have to say this is one of the better sushi spots out there. I got the lunch special A which is a great deal for 12$. Atmosphere is unique and very chill. Definitely coming here again
Stopped in for a quick lunch. Service was fast and friendly. We ordered a spicy tuna and a Philadelphia Roll. The philly roll was pretty standard. The spicy tuna was unique and had green onion and sesame seeds on it - super tasty flavor combo. The restaurant is located in the basement of the McKay Tower and there is ample seating between the “inside” and patio like setup just outside the restaurant in the shopping area.
