My favorite coffee shop in Cleveland. Great coffee selection and a friendly staff.
It is hard to find such historic, cosy, rustic style coffee shops these days. I absolutely enjoyed sipping on my cappuccino while snacking on a poppy-seeds' pastry and enjoying a comfy & warm atmosphere while reading my book.
While the simple storefront at W. 11th St. & Kenilworth Ave. in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood might look simplistic — and while a curious foray onto the website of said business might take you back to the early age of the internet — Civilization Coffee is, in practice, and exceptional experience.
I went here twice on my recent visit to Tremont. According to the sign on the building, this charming little coffee shop is situated inside the remains of a "Drugs & Medicine" store. How brilliant! It seems like a place where, when people walk in they see other patrons and say "Hey how goes it?" Such a quaint atmosphere and I enjoyed sitting with my mocha and bagel.
They will never see this review. Civilization could give two shits about this review. Does not do twitter, FB, Instagram, tinder, Etc. Just started taking credit cards in June of gosh darn 2014. I love them. They have a million dollar location on the corner of Lincoln Park and treat you like your $1.95 cup of coffee is the difference between them staying in business or not. The owner is there every morning smiling and hand washing the counters. There is the same lovable man sweeping the patio the same way at 7am every day 365 days a year. If Norman Rockwell showed up to paint a picture he would ask thme to "tone it down" with the Americana. This might be the best coffee shop in Ohio.
E. John Busser. I eat lunch almost every day at Civilizations the soup and deli sandwiches are the best I've ever had and they have an incredible variety of different coffees and teas, and I especially enjoy their iced and hot cappuccino which are both fantastic! A couple other things that make Civilizations so special are their great selection of pastries and the wonderful people that work there.
LOVE this place. The people are friendly, the setting is quaint, and the coffee and pastries are delicious. I go out of my way to stop here in the morning and to meet up with friends.
Donna Makar. Great sandwiches, great coffee, great soup, great everything!
A good cup of coffee. I LOVE coffee and this place is great! Almost anything on the menu is very flavorful and decently priced. The pastries are tasty too =)
An idyllic coffee shop: dark hard woods, close-knit seating, all the fixings of uncontrived authenticity. Good coffee drinks and excellent selection of foods and pastries. Location is central to some of the best things about Tremont area. Clearly a spot for good conversations and community.
My favorite coffee shop in Cleveland!! I love that they are independently owned, and have so far won the battle against that West coast chain which has killed too many of these. They’re set up in an old Apothecary, and retained most (actually, maybe all) of the original counter and drawers, so it’s a very unique hang out. Coffee is great, reasonably priced, and a decent food selection to make it a light lunch spot also.
Super cute and trendy coffee shop. The coffee is amazing and the baked goods are HUGE and delicious! The staff is very helpful and friendly if you need suggestions on what to order.
Probably my favorite coffee shop to visit just because of their dessert/bakery selections. Coffee was decent and they provided multiple lactose free milk choices. I recommend trying any of their "creamy" desserts and the pepperoni croissant.
Great spot to relax. Very good coffee. I had only a bagel, so I cannot comment on the food until I actually try it. Just moved into Tremont and this will definitely be a hangout
Definitely a really good place to go to grab a coffee and something sweet.
Great coffee. I ordered a gluten-free blueberry tart and I'll be dreaming about it for weeks. So good.
I was introduced to Civilization by some cycling friends, and it has become one of my favorite coffee places in downtown Cleveland. It is small with an old fashioned feel inside, and everything about it is excellent, from the coffees to the pastries to the breakfast food options. My go-to while there is a cafe americano and a ham and cheese croissant. Check them out - you will not be disappointed!
Delicious iced mocha.
Scone, sugar cookie, and s'mores bar all $3 each. YUM
The cake! The coffee!!! The cakes and the coffee!!! 🤣 DEFINATELY try their pepperoni croissant 😋 Good thing it's next to a park, I'd say it's best to walk!!! Nice daily selection of different roasts!!! ☕
