Best bakery in town! Best bread ever! Delicious baguettes and pastries. The chocolate cherry bread is to die for (only Wednesdays!). The blueberry lemon tart is out of this world. And who can forget the Jennifer cookies?

Thank you to Brian for unlocking the door and giving us a tour! The coconut macaroons are to die for and the lemon squares cannot be topped! Wish we lived a bit closer and could stop more frequently! Aidan can't stop planning for her bakery future!
Please don't change thing! Just keep doing what you're doing -- making the best bread around. Okay, maybe change one thing -- make more of it.
Located on Fairmount Boulevard and shockingly well attended considering an eight o’clock arrival on Tuesday, On The Rise Artisan Breads has quickly made a name for itself as one of Northeast Ohio’s go-to spots for Baked Goods, Soups and Sandwiches, the team’s passion for local products and skilled craftsmanship highly evident in each of their creations.
Technically a part of Cleveland Heights, the wealthy suburb allowing for prices necessary to make products the right way, On The Rise features a variety of seating options sprawling left and front of the open kitchen and glass cases, the list of temptations numbering about twenty during this visit and said to change frequently throughout the week as well as the season.
Busy but pleasant in service, Coffee service near a hallway en route to the back and bathrooms, it was with seven items bagged or plated that seating was secured for pictures and some tasting, a child and his father enjoying story time over Almond Croissants to the right as the youngster played with toys kept in the restaurant, first bites of that same pastry sending golden shards skyward as layers of lamination gave way to pure nut filling.
Finding the Apricot Jam Croissant every bit as compelling as the more tradition Almond version, no sog at all found amidst the Butter-rich core, Bostock unfortunately came across far drier than those tasted overseas or at Tartine in San Francisco – the course immediately back on track as the Sticky Bun unraveled in elegantly caramelized ribbons beneath Cinnamon Roasted Walnuts.
Unable to resist a good Cookie, the Oatmeal Raisin sweeter than many but still excellent with a center as soft as a bowl full of cooked Oats, the signature “Jennifer Cookie” is perhaps even more compelling as Chocolate Chips and Pecans dial up the toothsome circle’s texture, a Pear Frangipane Tart rounding out the morning with more than half of the delicious Almond base and soft Fruit proving just as tasty several hours later.
This place is legit! I've been trying to quote carbs for sometime, but I keep getting drawn bake in by their delicious breads... And the Banh mi (spelling?) is out of this world!
Fantastic authentic artisan breads. That on ole would be worth the 45 min drive for me, but no I come for the sandwiches. Amazing! Really unique creations like the pork Bahn Mi - out of this world.
Great bread and pastries. Problem is they NEVER bake enough. Show up after 10 am and they are out of everything. Also need to buy a bread slicer.
Good bread but there never is any. I like going to On the Rise. Their bread is excellent. I enjoy getting the scala when I come here. The only issue when I go there, a lot of times they don't have any bread. I've never heard of a bread place that doesn't have any bread. Good bread, they just to make more of it.
Love This Bread!. They make some amazing bread here. Grab some delicious, crusty, fresh bread and a (not-so-crescent-shaped) jam-filled croissant for the ride home!
11%???. As of the writing of this review, it says that 89% of the voters like this place. 11% don't?!?! Are they nuts? How could you not like a place that makes amazing artisinal breads? Where they always have lots of free samples to whet your appetite.
Simply the best breads and pastries I've found in Cleveland. Reminds me of good bread in Paris. The coffee is pretty good as well and if you sit around the big table there is almost always interesting conversation to be had.
France ... in your mouth. The selection isn't huge, and their hours are weird, but the baguettes and other breads remind me more of Paris than any boulangerie I've visited in Northeast Ohio, or maybe anywhere in the United States. The sweets are pretty great too, but definitely don't miss the traditional French bread.
Breads shine here.. Cinnamon raisin bread at on the rise could be the best without baking it myself as is their Challah. Pastries are tasty too at this neighborhood bakery that stands out because of the quality artisan breads and friendly atmosphere.
Beautiful breads. I got the prosciutto sandwich, apricot crossiant and chocolate crossiant.
The sandwich was crunchy yet airy on the inside. The creaminess of the butter and prosciutto melted together and the arugula gave it a fresh taste.
The crossiant was crispy, buttery and airy. Lovely with a cup of coffee in the morning.
Will come back to try other sandwiches 💕
Very tasty banh mi on fluffy well baked bread. Scrumptious oatmeal raisin cookie made for a spice forward desert. Staff is super nice. Atmosphere is laid back.
On of the best bakeries in the country. We stop here multiple times on our stay in Cleveland each year. Croissants are amazing as are there other breads.
Listen we LOVE on the rise. It’s our neighbor. We’re there all the time. But I can’t hold back anymore about the poison that they call coffee. It’s undrinkable to me. I honestly don’t know how employees can drink it without grimacing. But we will never stop patronizing because of the amazing service, bread, and pastries.
One of the better sandwich places around hand down. I wish they had a larger menu dedicated to their sandwiches. They are freshly made on the spot, ingredients are original and high quality. The owners came of arrogant a little bit, but I think they are just super liberal and it’s part of their persona, I don’t know. They came kind of condescending a bit but all around great place !!!
Very good precautionary measures for Covid - only 2 people at a time allowed. This is a measure which will help the citizens ward off infections while still trying to get their favorite morning breakfasts. The breads, croissants are delicious and the coffee has a distinct flavor which left me craving for more. Support support the local chain - doing an incredible job!!!
Our favorite weekend guilty pleasure! Don’t be intimidated by the line, it moves very quickly. They also let you call ahead and then the order is waiting although it’s more fun to browse the day’s fresh offerings. Tons of breads to choose that are also made there right on site.
Wow. Is it weird to say everything edible here is amazing?
The baked goods are sublime. If you visit the Van Aiken location, be sure to pair something with an espresso beverage from Rising Star Roasters.
Sandwiches not available until 9am EST, so be warned IF you're an early bird. Otherwise, nothing but good things to say about this gem of a cafe/bakery hidden in Shaker Height, Ohio.
Wonderful place! I got a latte and a chocolate chip cookie, it was perfect! Little pricey, but not any more than most local trendy coffee shops. The sandwiches looked amazing, I definitely want to go back to try one. I liked that you could see into the kitchen, everything looked clean. Only negative, not very great bathrooms. Not kept to the same standard as the rest of the place.
Well baked breads and pastries.
Whatever your desire for the day’s kitchen adventure, OTR has a bread to suit your needs. Daily selections rotate as well, so check the website or call to see what the special bake of the day is!
Sandwiches are always outstanding — don’t hesitate to ask for it to be cut in half. If you get the banh mi I would highly recommend the house hot sauce.
I never leave without several salted chocolate rye cookies. You MUST try them.
Also available are beautiful French pastries by ever lovely Britt-Marie. Be sure to stop in on the weekends for her outstanding éclairs and macarons!
