I used to go to sushi restaurant in Chicago. Now, I have found “The Place” in the North Shore Highland Park. Tanoshii Sushi Mike is a great sushi restaurant. Max is a amazing sushi Chef, creative, he really cares about the quality of the fish. Ordered 4 or 5 times a week, the best fish I ever found ever. Some fish are delivered from Japan. Chef Max totally dedicated to his passion. He provides you a unique experience of spices, broth, balanced elegantly with fish and sea food. In a word, amazing. This young Chef is talented. Great future ahead for sure. Just go.

Love, love, love this place and Sushi Mike. We always get the Sushi Mike special where they choose for you and you just sit and relax. We are never disappointed!!! Every roll was incredible. If you order Sushi Mike special, expect to pay more than $100 for the dinner (depending on how many rolls you get) some of the rolls cost more than $25 but are DELICIOUS. This place is BYOB so don’t forget to bring a bottle of wine or whatever you want.

Do the Tanoshii specialty of omakase. Fish and chip, seared tuna, fresh wasabi roll, salmon truffle roll, Italian roll, and spicy roll. Probably one more than we needed for two people, but worth it. The Italian was intriguing, but probably the only one I wouldn’t order again.

Wonderful experience, great accommodating service, they know the right amount of server to costomer interactions so they don’t bother you during your meal, personable experience, the quality of the fish is reflected in the price, taste is very fresh, and some of the best miso soup i’ve had! The atmosphere is very laid back, and the restaurant is not loud at all! I would say that it isn’t too kid friendly, definitely a date night kind of place, highly recommend, will be coming back, one of my favorite places in Chicago

The sushi at Tanoshii was amazingly prepared and so delicious. We got the fish and chips as well as some omakase items. The fish and chips is an amazing deal and might have been the tastiest thing of the night. They never let my water glass be half empty and were very good at every point. BYOB but a corkage charge. They will give you a nice bucket of ice to keep it cold though!

Love this place. The rolls are very well thought out and executed. The nigiri is perfection. You can tell everything is super fresh and done with precision. Even the miso soup, gyoza, and shumai appetizers were great. Definitely a solid choice for sushi night! Added BYOB bonus

Was a great dinner. Sushi rolls were creative and yummy. We did the Omakase. Def worth a try though. Chef Mike (owner) is a character. Chatting up folks while he makes his sushi.

Bring a 6-pack of miller lite in cans for surly Sushi Mike and sit at the bar. Start with Fish N Chips.

My wife is a huge fan of sushi, and because of that, we are constantly trying different sushi spots around the city. We came across Tanoshii when searching to top sushi in Chicago, and decided to stop by for a Saturday dinner. We were greeted by a friendly waitress/host upon entering, and were attended to pretty quickly. A standout of the meal was the service provided, as the waitress never allowed my glass of water to be empty prior to refilling it, and was consistently pouring more when I finished about half, so kudos there! The place was neatly and purposely decorated, providing a very authentic Japanese feel to the restaurant. After a few minutes reviewing the digital menu, we decided to start with the cheekily named Fish and Chips (an original creation from the Executive Chef, Sushi Mike), and I had the Spicy Roll (another Sushi Mike special) as my main entrée along with a scallop nigiri and chutoro nigiri, while my wife decided to go with an Andersonville Roll and Spider Roll. I didn't really know what to expect from the Fish and Chips, and was even more bewildered when the dish itself was brought out. The waitress asked us if we had the dish before, and we said no. She took the reigns and began mixing the ingredients of the plate together, creating wonderful mishmash of tuna, avocado, red tobiko, and pico de gallo, which was then split and placed on top of two formidable tortilla chips. The appetizer tasted delicious, and in particular, I appreciated the additional texture the tobiko provided to each bite. After we cleaned up our appetizers, the Maki was brought out. I was excited to taste the Spicy Roll as I was a fan of the Fish and Chips, and wanted to see what else Sushi Mike's mind came up with. The roll tasted fantastic and had a perfect heat to it; no additional Wasabi or soy sauce needed. The fish tasted fresh, the roll held well together, and all together made for a great bite! I tried the Andersonville and Spider rolls my wife had, and they were fairly typical of what you would expect, with an added freshness to it. The same can also be said about the nigiri, where the chutoro was my preferred of the two. While good, the rolls and nigiri did not have the "wow" factor Sushi Mike's concoctions had, though, you will pay a premium for that creativity compared to the other rolls on the menu. Overall, our meal was delicious and left satisfied. I would love to come back again to try more of Sushi Mike's specialties, as the two we had were unique and flavorful. A second visit might be in the near future!

The staff is so lovely and the food is incredible. It was a very busy night and they were short staffed but they were so kind and brought us appetizers while we waited for sushi. I look forward to going back for sushi again!
