Beautiful food, lovely flavours. Sushis were very good, as was the seaweed salad and smoked fish. Average miso soup - but then I don't really know what super amazing miso soup would be.
The octopus sashimi was special. I'd never tried raw octopus before so I don't have a reference - but I dont think am gonna eat it again.
Asahi beers and green tea made the meal neatly complete. I was happy.
Our first time there. The food was way above average for local sushi restaurants. We had a Saba Batura, presses, vineyards rice and Mackerel made in a box. One of our favorites if done correctly and they made it perfectly. Rolls and sushi were excellent as was the bottle of cold saki. We will be returning soon.
In Prospect Heights! On Washington! Wow!. Believe it or not, there is good sushi in Prospect Heights (not great, but pretty good). I'm one of those annoying people who thinks most restaurants in Brooklyn think they can charge Manhattan prices for lousy food (plenty of restaurants in Manhattan think they can charge Manhattan prices for lousy food), but Gen is reasonably priced and better than some significantly more expensive places (especially those on Flatbush, like Geido).
The best in Park Slope is now pretty good, and insanely over-priced. Gen gives them a run for their money and a far better rate.
Gen Rocks!. By far the best Japanese Restaurant in Brooklyn.
The daily specials are really "SPECIAL". Black sesame tofu was just pure poetry and looks like the Uni shot now is a fix item on the menu. it's just disappointing when they ran out of ingredients/dishes, but I think it is the name of the game when you work with fresh ingredients.
This is my daughter’s favorite spot for Japanese food in Brooklyn. The food here is consistent. We have been coming to Gen for over 10 years but I just decided to take photos for a review now. If you look for a spot for a Japanese brunch on the weekends, give them a try!
Gen is authentic, serving very high quality food. Terrific sake and specialty beer list. The service is great and the vibe is comfortable and unfussy. Oh, and they have the best japanese curry in Brooklyn!
Small, really cute place to have amazing Japanese food. All the dishes were delicious, made with fresh ingredients, from the kara-age to the rolls. The waiter was really kind and attentive too. I highly recommend this place if you want to have a great Japanese experience
This is hands down one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in NYC (which I'm biased because I live very near by). Everything I've eaten here has been excellent, and all of the sushi/sashimi is reasonably priced for what you're getting.
I think I've been here about 8 times so far over the last 2 years, and it's always been a good meal.
The food at Gen is excellent. The udon is delicious and the sushi is killer. Worth the visit if you’re in the area. Can’t wait to sit outside now that the weather is nice.
Super fun, small authentic Japanese place. Tons of options. I had the vegetarian dashi with udon and the vegetable tempura roll. When I say the soup was full bodied and the tempura had such a strong umami flavor I cannot emphasize how uniquely well done these basics were. The service was Lightning fast, and the servers were so good humored and accommodating. I asked for a dark beer and they recommended a beer described as chocolatey that was so perfectly what I wanted. I also had the green tea iced cream which was light and not bitter. We went in without a reservation but the staff let us have a table as soon as one opened up. We stayed slightly past closing, but didn’t feel rushed and absolutely enjoyed hearing the staff enjoying each others company. Seems like they are passionate about this place. Pictured: the udon I absolutely destroyed, the beer I had and the green tea ice cream.

Incredible fresh fish! We ordered the Omakase and it did not disappoint. Every fish was yummy. We also had miso and edamame as starters. Their sale selection excellent as well. The ambiance is very cute and intimate. Great service! We had an excellent experience overall. Perfect for a date or small group.
Probably the best sushi in the neighborhood, although Silver Rice is awesome; Gen does a different thing though, with lots of daily specials, inventive combos, and fresh chef touches. Good sake and beer menu. Weathered outside begets cozy and intimate seating inside - interesting corner space. For its small size, punches way above its weight. Nice service. Good value with price options for all kinds of folks. Tasty. Gets crowded on peak times on weekends.
Gen is my only claimable regular-ish spot, because they actually make it delicious AND affordable! 30 dollar seven-piece omakase? Fresh fish that never misses?? Perfect low key vibe for a weeknight relaxed meal or solo at the counter. service is always friendly. Love pulling up to this spot and highly advocate for it so it thrives as it deserves.
We are so in love with Gen we have to stop ourselves from going every night. It is the coziest place with some of the most flavorful food I’ve ever had. The uni don (eel) is mouthwatering, spectacular, and we get it every time. The rolls are hearty and well-priced, and the small omakase is lovely too. Our server is fantastic (I think her name is Yuki, apologies if not), she helped us navigate the drinks menu and was so kind. I loved the “marshmallow notes” sake, we loved the ale too. One of the best places in Brooklyn.
