The general Tso’s chicken was delicious. The egg roll is one of the better one I have eaten. The price is reasonable. Our sever was very good and polite.
Not impressed. Food was a bit bland. poor service.
meat still tough and vegetables over cooked
The best and good price. This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurants. The food always tastes fresh and the price is right.
Clean Plates!. Hunan is the go-to for my classic Chinese food fix. The service is friendly; they actually engage & interact with people. They kept drinks filled & quite a few regulars seemed to be in there when I was. H&S soup - pretty good. Egg roll - standard but fresh. Dishes are superb. The vegetables have a light crunch & flavor, everything piping hot, just enough sauce for the rice & not drowning in it. The value is great, Kung Pao, Mongolian, Szechuan, tofu too - it's all good. & HOT mustard!!!
A safe bet for a good dinner. Hunan Garden is one of those restaurants we get takeout from occasionally, where we know what the expect and we always get good food. Their mongolian beef is some of the best I've had in Birmingham. Their shrimp fried rice is tasty with big plump shrimp, not those tiny canned shrimp you get at other restaurants. The Hot and Sour soup isn't the best in Birmingham but it's not BAD either. I think the egg rolls are Jade Mountain frozen ones like I can buy at Sysco because they aren't anything special. They aren't bad, but they look machine made... not fat, too perfectly shaped.. I've had better egg rolls. Still I recommend Hunan to anyone wanting some traditional Chinese food in the Hoover area.
Yes, Please. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Yummy eggrolls, awesome egg drop soup, and ANY of the plates are good. Buddha to Sesame chicken; I've never had a dish that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Prices are extremely affordable, and if you want it to go, they stuff as much as they can into the boxes (no skimping here).
Very good food and tons of it! You can share one entree and pay less! Will return for sure!
Good Stuff!!. Went for my first time today....everything was really good and the service was awesome! Need good chinese in a hurry? The food was out so fast I couldn't believe it! I highly reccommend this place.
This is the best place for Chinese in south Birmingham. I recommend the orange peels with beef, it is beyond good. At ~$9 per person for dinner, you cannot beat the value of Hunan.
The only place!. This is the ONLY place I will go to eat Chinese food. The sesame chicken is heaven. The hot and sour soup is also excellent. I have never really noticed the staff (neither bad nor good) but the servers always keep your cups full. I have broken down and tried other Chinese places, but this one takes the cake! YUM!
If you like the real Chinese rice with shrimps and everything in... this is the place 🙌 👌 every weekend I order my food here 😋 🙌
Frankly, I don’t know why this place isn’t more popular. I no longer live in the area, so anytime I come back to Birmingham I try to stop and have at least one meal at Hunan Garden because it’s been so consistently good over the last two decades.
Everything about this place is old school Chinese restaurant, from the décor to the worn booths, to the menu. Even the way the waitstaff acts around customers, it’s a whole different vibe. It isn’t chic, it isn’t trendy and it sure isn’t slick and modern. But it is really, really good food, and isn’t that the most important thing?
The last time I dined in, I tried the Hunan Combination, which has shrimp, chicken and pork in a sweet and spicy sauce. Think of General Tso’s but with a lighter, brighter sauce and you get the idea. It was good, but not very spicy at all, and there were only a few shrimp in the entire dish. Everything was super tender, at least.
My dining companions picked their usual favorites: Lemon Chicken and Mongolian Beef. The Lemon Chicken is almost like a citrus candy it’s so sweet, and the breaded and fried chicken is tender, but with a crunchy crust. The Mongolian beef is a real standout thanks to the thin, crispy slices of beef. There’s a deep umami flavor at work here that compliments the tang of the green onions.
Sweet tea is always good and sweet and strong, too, which is nice. The servers might seem to be kind of aloof or even rude at first, but they open up quickly and are good with suggestions and advice. Drinks are quickly refilled and the overall dinner pace is usually on the slow side of efficient but good enough.
After all these years, it remains my single favorite Chinese restaurant anywhere in the state of Alabama. The quality of the food, the flavor and the great prices charged are just an unbeatable combination, even if it is old and showing its age, and out of touch with the hipster diner ethic of today. That just makes it all the better in my book.
The chicken low mein and pork fried rice are incredible. Excellent and quick service. Appetizers were ok. Got spare ribs, crab rangoon, fried dumplings and chicken nuggets. Will definitely be back.
Hot and Sour soup is amazing. Good food at a good price
My husband and I love this place, our favorite Chinese food! Try the sizzling rice, to die for!
