Grilled cheese is awesome so of course this place is too. I go classic w/ the big dipper - grilled cheese w/ tomato soup. They have ~20 different sandwiches plus a build your own option if the classic isn't for you. It's good to experiment and try the 20+ different cheeses available to find what you like. The rewards program is also a nice addition! Make sure you bring your card - After 10 visits you get a free meal. Might not sound like much but that's nearly 10% off if you go there 11 times (no time frame limit).
Chedd's is exactly what it sounds like, no less. All of the sandwiches are good but especially the California Coast. Definitely get a bowl of the fresh tomato soup to go with it. The up grade bread and the Wisconsin cheese go perfectly together. One of these days ill bring in a Wisconsin license plate and get my free sandwich. Look for the bogo coupon online.
Chedd's rocks my socks. My favorite is the California Coast. The tuna salad is made to order! The bread gets perfectly crispy on the outside while the inside stays soft and holds onto the gooey cheese. They even offer half-sandwiches--order anything off the menu in a half-size portion for half the price.
One of the things that is best about Chedd's is the location in Austin. If you want a great downtown experience this is the place for you. Serving up some local flavor with cheese has never been better. Along with a soup selection that is a great accompaniment Chedd's is a place that I would recommend and day of the week!
I almost didn't go... When I saw the menu and noticed that the sandwiches were nearly $7 and almost all contained meat I just about raised my fist and grumbled.
As I was walking out however, i happened to look it up on Foursquare... And it said that if you were here you could get 50% off your order.

I re-entered the door and decided to go with the build your own sammich- focaccia, queso asadero and mushrooms. It was $3.23. They toasted it, I took it home, and started in.
Now, I admit that perhaps it was my odd choices of toppings. It was pretty good. But it wasn't the best. But it was pretty good. I ate the whole thing, it was good enough for that.
I gave it 4 stars for offering half off and making it a pretty affordable sandwich. I'll withhold a star because I would have felt way ripped of paying $7 + tax for that sandwich.
Experienced Chedd's at a catering event and am now loving the grilled cheese life. Build your own satisfies weird diet/lifestyle people like me and inventions that will tackle even the most curious palate.
It's a gourmet grilled cheese place...if that's not convincing enough to try it out, then there is something wrong with you. Unless you're deathly allergic to dairy or cheese or lactose intolerant. I would suggest anything on Texas toast and the tomato soup.
